Yearly my Dad and I routinely try to plant tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, zucchini, onions, radishes, beet, and sweet corn. Anybody got anything else to add to this list?

Where's the habanero's on your list? We do lots of peppers along with everything you mentioned. Mostly cayenne, and habanero since I like stoopid hot, because they don't overpower dishes but add that nice ball of fire to them.
Also spices (we plant them in between the bulk plants) like basil, oregano, cilantro, dill, thyme, etc.
Melons? Pumpkin?
Since you're in a cool climate, all types of lettuce. We stick with the leaf lettuce and romaine types just to make it interesting. For us, it's a spring and fall crop.
Tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, hot peppers, egg plant, cilantro, and basil. Root vegetables don’t do well where I am, at least not with me. I might try some cantaloupe and watermelon this spring.

what does it matter what others plant in their garden ?
plant what you like & what grows best for your location! end of story IMO!
no point in trying to grow pineapple or peanuts in iowa you get the point.
since this is a survival section, this from what I've read, grow some cayenne chiles - reason being they can stop bleeding, nothing like a gunshot but minor bleeding they say it can handle minor bleeding. then when you think of it, it doesnt matter if its cayenne or something else cuz the main properities is in all chiles, so I guess the main thing to consider if you grow for this reason is a higher heat chiles, NOT your wimpy chiles!
