i just found some cheap ammo for my mosin! its winchester 180 grain fmj....i didnt even know winchester made 7.62x54R? i guess i need to get out more? but it was 14 and change per box. im going to shoot tomorrow ill let yall know how it does. i usually dont buy factory ammo, but i havent got dies for the 7.62x54R yet. has anyone ever used these winchesters?
Whirlwind, let me/us know how the better commercial shoots in your Mosin. I use Wolf copper washed cased ammo and, except in my beat up 44, it really tightens up the bolt action in my 39 and 91/30.
I've been wondering if the tightness is from the cheaper Wolfe expanding more or what.
I ran across some, believe it or not, $1.99 per 15 paper wrapped ammo at the last gun show. But, the guy selling it couldn't tell me anything about it....where made, when, corrosive/non-corrosive, etc.....so, I didn't buy any. It was some SAD looking chit, though.
Good luck....yepper....fer sure.

thats Sellior&belliot(sp) made stuff, winny isn't making it they have S&B make it. what does the headstamp say??? i have never been able to locate any locally and was curious.
well, the winchester ammo did great as far as operation goes! i wasnt very impressed with accuracy of it though...but dont get me wrong! the rifle shot great but i believe that i could tweak some reloads and get it to shoot alot better! first thing is im gonna start with some 200 gn sierra bthp match bullets! ya know in every .30 caliber i have ever owned, it has always been the heavier bullets that shoot best? well when ever my dies get in at the gunshop ill make some up and let ya know how they did.....oh and to the guy that e-mailed me about the ammo for sale? thanks but no thanks,i have swore off factory loads for the sheer pleasure of rolling my own
Let us know how the reloading goes. It would be interesting to find out what loads work for you.
I have never seen the Winchester 7.62x54 either, but I have fired some of the S&B 180 SP ammo. Decent stuff.
I had an interesting ammo experience this afternoon. One of my favorite rifles to shoot (I have no idea why....) is a gunsmith special 91/30 that I struggled with initially in order to get something on a target that resembled a group at 50 yards. She ended up with a 24" barrel after I cut the worst 4" off the muzzle, but that's another story. Anyway, I gave her every advantage that I could think of during the quest for reasonable accuracy from her well worn barrel. I then fired Barnauls, S&B, Russian surplus, Albanian surplus, and Wolf 148gr FMJ....and found that the best and most consistent groups were from the Wolf 148gr FMJ ammo (average 1 1/2" groups at 50 yards....that's the best that she could do...). I then worked the sights until she fired the Wolf 148gr groups to a zero 3/4" above the bull at 50 yards (sights set to 100) and left her that way.
I bought some Wolf 200gr SP loads several months ago. Today I finally had the chance to try them out. The first group was slightly tighter than I used to get from the 148gr loads, but the group was a full 4" to the left center and 1 1/2" high. I figured that I must have wacked the front sight at some point. I had failed to bring along any of the 148gr Wolf stuff, but I did have some Albanian surplus in the truck; so, I fired a 4-round group of that. The group size increased to 2.25" with the Albanian ammo, but it was centered and 1" high.......right about where it should be. I am still intrigued by the 4" to the left groups from the Wolf 200gr SP's....especially since the barrel is now floated....I pretty much expected to see a shift in the vertical with the heavier bullet, but never expected such a dramatic shift in the horizontal.
i have come up with that same thing in my 06's. although i dont know for sure, i believe it has to do with the heavier bullets (having higher pressures) must be effected more by the lands in the barrel. like i said its just a theory on my part but its the best i can come up with..... make sense to anyone else?
I reckon it's mostly just a matter of the different oscillations of the barrel generated by the different loads/bullet weights and the muzzle velocity variance. I just never expected to see that large of a shift in the horizontal (at only 50 yards). Maybe I need to turn my head sideways and look at that target again.....or better yet, try a 220gr bullet to see if this old gal will shoot around the corner of a building!
