Talking What Would You Do????

you see an ad in the stuff for sale section of the classifieds. bare bones ad, says Rifle for sale and phone #. you call guy has great-grandpas old hunting rifle, wants to sell it, but hasn't a clue to its value, just an old gun.

you go to the house, and its something you have been dieing to get, and its worth some bucks.

A. do you give him and honest thought of its value, and pay accordingly???
or
2.you are coy, and play the "its old junk and not worth much, hoping for a bite.???
and
III.what would you hope it would be???

My thoughts

Howdy Papa G,

Give me this guys addy, so I can out bid you!!!! LOL!!!

seriously though,

A) No

2) I'd see what he wants for the gun. I'd prolly then offer him a little more money than he was expecting to get, unless he wanted 1,000 dollars for a gun you could buy anywhere for 100 bucks......

3) Let's say it is an IH M-1 Garand, in what the CMP would call "Collecters Grade" Looked all original and very well kept. If he wanted 400 dollars for it, I'd give it to him. If he wanted 150, I'd give hem 250, cause it was "in really nice shape."

I don't feel you are screwing someone unless you pay 50 bucks for a 4,000 dollar gun, and you talked him down to 50 bucks from 400. I don't feel I am taking advantage of someone if I do not lie to him.

"Wow, that's in really great shape." not a lie....
"You onjy want 150 for it? Look let's be fair, I'll pay 200 for it as it is in good condition and I have been looking for one like this." no lie again.......

By not going what are you? Nuts? That is worth 4 grand! You are not really screwing the guy. You made a really good deal. Buyer beware also goes for the seller, it is up to them to research that value of what they want to sell........

Exclamation

My dream situation is - Grandpa died, and Gramma doesn't want his old "squirrel rifle" in the house. Arrive there to find - a pristine BSA MkII Martini with target scope (the whole nine yards!).
I'd see what Gramma wants ("a hundred dollars, okay Ma'am, sounds good!").
Moral dillema - I find out Gramma is on fixed income and needs meds - offer her two hundred.

Ideal situation - woman divorces hunter hubby and gets his guns, for spite. Then she sells 'em for peanuts, just to P.O. him. Hey, I can scrape up lotsa peanuts. I wouldn't feel bad about beating her out of some bucks.

I'd offer to take that old gun off their hands for a hundred bucks. Tell them it looks like it MIGHT be an M1 Garand. Not worth much more cause millions of em were made.

I personally wouldn't screw somebody......

Had a similar situation yesterday. Was helping an acquaintance move into a new house. He had a very old Stevens Model 30 that his grandfather had given him.........he wanted to sell it eventually. Asked me if I would be interested in it........told him yes. But he had no clue what it was worth............I told him the truth. 1*

OLD GUNS

QUITE OFTEN I AM FACED WITH OLD GUNS OFFERED TO ME FOR SALE. WHEN THE GUN IS WORTH MORE THAN THEY ARE ASKING I TELL THEM AND USUALY DO NOT BUY THE GUN. PASSING UP A STEAL IS WORTH IT TO ME. MANY TIMES THEY WILL SAY THANK YOU BUT THE PRICE THEY ASK HOLDS . I AM NOT SURE IF SOME OF THESE PEOPLE SOMEHOW TALK TO EACHOTHER BUT I GET CALLS TO VALUE GUNS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD I WILL TELL THEM A FAIR PRICE TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY.

I'm like/with *1.

I wouldn't take anyone to the bank regardless of the reasons.

I figure I'd have to live with myself afterwards.

From what I've read sounds ALMOST (don't misqoute by saying I say it was exactly) knowingly getting too much change back from a cashier and sticking them with their mistake.

If this guy with the gun was a gun dealer or a knowledgable person regarding guns and he/she knew he was giving it up for pennies on the dollar, it would be different.

Im like Dale and 1 * I would never screw any one, I would tell them the gun is worth a lot more, and probably spend time trying to find out how much and then tell em, thats why I can never get good deals, to freaking honest

Thumbs up

Actually, I did knock myself out of a possible good deal once at the gunshow. One of my favorite vendors (have bought several vintage rifles from him) had an old Mauser he had just gotten in. He didn't have it priced yet, cause he didn't know what model it was. I examined it, and found it was a Spanish Model 43 airforce-issue model - kinda scarce but not really rare. I've got one that was bubba'd, and would've liked to had this one - it was dirty but complete. I showed him the particular things to look for in this model.
Later went back, and he had it priced right for that model, after he had time to check his books. Too bad I didn't have the money . . .

Ask him what he wants and go from there. If he's too lazy or not smart enough to check on it's value, goody for me!

I was referring to people who just don't have any knowledge of guns pr their value. Many times they look to us as being knowledgeable about guns and their values. Therefore, they would hope, and I think it's reasonable, that I do so.....I'm just one of those with a huge conscience.
