Hey guys, I'm new to the ruger family forum. I purchased a p89dc last week and I'm kinda doin some (late)research on em. I've heard some really good things about the p90, and I figured since they were both basically the same platform, the p89 is just as solid and reliable. I've also heard that p89's are crap, but that was from a very critical friend. anyway, lemme hear how your p89dc's are treating all you, thanks

Reason: title typo
I've had a P89 for many years and shot 1,000's of rounds thru it . Never ever a jam or miss fire . pretty accurate and extremely reliable in my opinion.

Just be sure to follow the instructions exactly when you take it down and put it back together. Rugers can be pretty frustrating if you don't things just right. It isn't difficult, just requires a specific series of steps done in a particular way. Gun orientation during reassembly is critical.
My P series is a P95DC. It's great!

thanks guys. I just found a p95 for 50$ less than I bought the p89 for! Ive heard good things about the 95, it looks smaller, but I like the front rail.
I noticed my ammo is 9x19mm +p. Is there anything I should know about ammo usage/restrictions? I read that any 9x19 can be fired thru the 89
I've had a P89DC since about 94 or so. The only issue I had was with a cheapy aftermarket mag and not the gun itself. If you try shooting from a bench rest you will discover your pistol is quite accurate. Shooting a pistol accurately takes a lot of practice! I have nothing bad to say about my Ruger! I would like to see them make a compact auto, however. Enjoy that gun, it will serve you well! By the way, no problem shooting +P ammo.
I love my P89 it was my first gun. I have shot somewhere 5 and 6 thousand rounds through it in the 12 years I have had it. It still looks brand new and shoots perfect. I put some houge grips on it, other than that all I have done is shoot it.
i also have a p85 which is the same as your gun i put adjustable sights on it and replaced the hammer spring with a 20 lbs (wolf) spring (this makes the trigger pull lighter. its very very accurate at 25 yd i can shoot the end out of a beer can -and as for me i clean it after every use-you clean a frypan after you cook bacon dont you
I love my P89, not a high dollar gun or a fancy gun, but it is on my nighttable by my bed and my better half can shoot it with no problem. cant ask for much more.
I own both a P-89 and a P95. They are excellent guns and will eat any 9mm load ever made and come back for seconds.
The P-89 platform was tested by Ruger during the Military M-9 trials and they did their best to destroy it. They screwed a 3" bolt down the barrel and fired the gun. They only had to replace the bulged barrel. They cut the frame below the ejection port and then put 10,000 rounds of 9MM NATO ammo thru it. If that wasn't enough, the then took a .5" chunk out on the other side and shot another 5,000 thru the pistol with only about .75" of the metal holding the slide together.
The Berretta won due to politics, not design or strength.
Back in the mid 90s I had a P89. It NEVER ever failed me in any way shape or form. Like others have said, they are tanks. You will never in a life time destroy one from normal to slightly abusive use. The ONLY reason I got rid of it was because I also had a P226 at the same time that was equaly tough, but shot just under 2" at 25 yards while the P89 was a 3-4" gun at the same distance and I did not feel like feeding two guns...
I can tell you right now if I can ever find one used for a good price I will snatch one up. Problem is I NEVER see used P89s or used P95s. Whats that tell ya?
I just bought one from a buddy for $100. He was hard up for cash. He said he couldnt hit a beer can @ 25yds with it. I'm sure it was free hand and he only shot it about 25 times. He bought it used as well. It needs a good cleaning before I fire it. Maybe next week.....
