God Bless the 7.-- I don't get it why are we so interested in exploring space. With all the problems here on EARTH why are we so concerned about spending 500 million more. Is this a get a way for the elite if the big bang goes down. This Buck Roger's idea is going to take longer then God's time is going to allow. From my heart-- Columbia -- May God Speed. You folks got a glimpse of heaven I am jealous. American Heros--Amen.

Why did Lewis and Clark look for a northeast passage?, why are we always drawn to the unknown territory?, why did Shackleton look for the north pole?, why did Sir Edmund Hillary try do climb mount Everest? Its a part of us, always exploring, looking for new horizens, its a part of bieng human, we are the consumate explorers, always testing the envolope, its who we are

There've been tons of good industrial spin-offs from the Space Program - from materials manufacturing to computer technology to whoknowswhatall! Add to that our natural curiosity about "what's out there". The Western peoples have a natural drive to explore (and yes, to exploit, too), so we're always looking for new horizons - new lands to conquer. As our population continues to grow, this little rock of ours get's smaller and smaller - we need to spread our wings and seek out other places. Ideally, I'd like to see far less money wasted on political pork and useless social programs, and more on the Space Program. I'd like to know that my kids and grandkids have more options than this over-crowded planet.

I see a need for the space program..in a way....but I got to admit that the waste of $$ is appaleing!!...Florida is non union...low wages...Cape (Nasa) is federal..union run....they have guys makeing $25 per hour to do nothing but watch a guage..and a 2nd person remotly monatering the same guage.....lots of waste...cost over runs ect. I think the program is good...just not managed well.........some cost are high because of polatics....part x made in this state...part Z in that...special transportation ect...it all adds up. Then too are the programs that get started then canceled after a billion or so $$ is spent......The space program is a major source of employment for my area (and me for that matter) but it needs better fiscial management.

NASA grossly overengineers most parts and and then cuts corners on critical components. Also, there is a huge amout of documentaion that has to be created for everything. Often the paperwork costs more than the part.

I would rather see the money spent on NASA then the 25 Billion we are going to send to Africa to teach people that you don't get rid of AIDS by giving it to some one else. For that matter I would like to know how much money we have spent on "The War on Poverty" that started under the JOHNSON administration. When are we going to declare victory and demobilize the welfare agencies of America, or admit defeat and do the same? I look at the space program the same way I look at my whole life insurance policy. Probably won't do me much good but somebody will see the payoff.

I reread my post, and think some people may get the wrong impression. I strongly support the space program. I do oppose government waste, mismanagement, and stupidity.

Personally I like to see the space program focus more on Manned Missions to Mars and Back to the Moon with the idea of establishing colonies. This Planet isn't getting bigger and we are running out of room and resources. The moon is a Big hunk or Ore esentially as are many of the Asteroids in the Asteriod Belt think of the advatages of being able to mine those resourses instead of tearing up out own planet. (at least it would shut the eco whackos up.) I also would like to see alot more funding go to the development and eventual construction of Faster than Light propulsion. Until we develop something like that the best we are going to be able to do is crawl and I do mean crawl around our immeadiate stellar back yard. You can call me a dreamer but thats what the said about the Wright Brothers and Columbus and everyone who ever thought of going to space or the moon.

What we need to do is get the guvmint out of the space program. Let the Big Mega-Corporations handle it. Once they understand the money and other things to be gained "out there", they'll develop the resources to go after it. The major exploration trips in the Age of Sail were done for monetary reasons - get the rich resources from there and bring back here. We need to see space as the same thing. A big Corp. won't accept the loss of a multi-billion dollar ship - they'll build it safer than the military. Not to say accidents won't happen - but they won't be as apt to write it off with the crews. 'Course, it'll be Unionized, resulting in bigger salaries for the workers, and bennies. Pros and Cons, but it would be better than the military running the show. We need progress and development - not just "getting by".
