H&k 45: Could this be the right one for me?

I am looking to buy a new firearm for carry purposes. Due to my particular profession I am often in places where the police do not want to follow. A good firearm for me is more than a tool. It can feel like a friend and offers assurance and some insurance.

I am in need of another firearm and am doing some research. So many choices, price points, styles and qualities to choose from. My concealed carry choices in the past have been Smith& Wessons and Sigs. A friend of mine who was a ranger in the early days of Afghanistan (early 80's) then a leader of the D.C. anti drug task force suggested the H&K 45. He knows reliability is top priority for me. He also knows that with my competitive shooting, accuracy is quite important as well.

He and I both understand what it's like to be in "hot" situations and his suggestions were given not only as a caring friend, but as a professional as well. I would like to hear from others who have used this firearm, who have read reviews, or can direct me to hopefully unbiased reviews and helpful information. Please let me know what you think.

What are the physical conditions? i.e. wet, dry, dusty, hot, cold, all the above......

Will it be concealed at all times, or worn exposed in a holster, or combination?

An intelligent response would require more data than you have provided.

I have shot HK .45 ACP. It's a nice shooting gun at the range. It's very similar to the SIG P220 in the way it performs, but has a "feel" more like a Beretta, which I am not personally fond of. Other than that data, I can not say if the HK or some other gun would be your best choice.

Border Patrol Agents up here in the PNW carry the HK. Some like them, some don't. Coast Guard troops carry SIG. I carry Glock for most of the reasons you cited.

More data from you about your parameters would yield better advice.

H&k 45

Hello Ten Man,

Thank you for responding to my post. My mode of carry is concealed at all times usually in an IWB holster and carry in all conditions. I'm from Mass and often travel further North and need to be prepared for many weather conditions. Some areas, due to forest and mountain conditions can be pretty cold and wet. Other conditions can be hot and humid during the summer and early part of autumn and I need to dress in lightweight clothing. There can be no tell that I'm carrying. I am also more familiar with a double/single action firearm.

I recently up-graded my carry weapon to an H&K USP .45 Compact and I'm really satisfied with it. Being a large caliber it has the stopping power I was looking for and being a match shooter, I demand a lot more accuracy than most in a defense weapon. So far , the gun has performed flawlessly, eats whatever I feed it from full power defense loads to very light target loads and everything in between. As far as accuracy goes, this thing shoots like it has eyes. At 50' I have no problem holding a 2-3" group consistantly. I love my H&K and probably will not have to upgrade again, but please don't take my word. Do some homework, look at all your options and if possible try one and see how you like it. Hope this helps......bob
