Mag well length and width variations?

I bought a lower yesterday, and was in the process of putting it together this morning...

It's a JD Machine lower, I had never heard of them before. The guy at SOG told me they are the company that is making all of their lowers for them, and that they've been pretty good stuff so far (dude said he had built up about 30 of them so far), with the exception the bolt catch pin hole being rather small and requiring a bit more force than usual to get it in. One of the guys in their shop went ahead and dropped the mag release and bolt catch in for me before I left, and it was gtg.

One other thing I noticed, however, was the magazine well appears to be slightly longer and maybe a few thousandths of an inch wider than the mag well on my RRA. It doesn't appear to allow for wobble to the point where it would matter, and it looks like this may actually be a good thing.

I have a pair of steel Pro-Mag 20rd mags and four Sig polymer mags. The steel mags require actual force to pull them out of the RRA mag well, whereas the Sig mags gently slide out when you hit the button. This JD lower just dumps the mag, no questions asked.

Has anyone ever encountered a lower with a mag well being so large that it allowed for back and forth tilt to the point it wouldn't feed? I'm not too concerned about it being a bit more "loose" than on my HB setup, I was just wondering if anyone has ever run into any problems where it was "too loose" to function...

Too loose? No. Too tight? Yes. My Spike's lower wouldn't seat several of my 6.8 SPC C-Product magazines, but they fit on my other lowers, which is why I don't use the Spike's for my 6.8s anymore. It does work fine with the PMags and USGI mags, though.

The main thing I was worried about, really, was the magazine tilting too far forward or backward for proper loading because the mag well seems to be too long. We'll see what it does when I get it fully assembled...

You know I had the same problem with an AR lower I was building, turned out that it wasn't the magwell that was the problem, it was actually the trigger guard that was out of spec. It was protruding into the magwell just enough to rub the magazine and make a tight squeeze. I put in a Magpul enhanced trigger guard and it turned out great.

Are you serious? I just looked at mine, and that's in the neighborhood of 3/16"! What brand of LPK was that? I'll have to stay away from them...

Yeah no kidding. It was a Fulton Armory LPK. Never doing that one again!

I've seen some bad stuff pass by the QC man before, but that's ridiculous by machine shop standards. Thanks for the heads-up.

Well, I know it wasn't the trigger guard, just that Spike's puts a thick layer of Teflon or whatever it is on all their lowers. The LPK on that particular build was an RRA.

Took the new carbine out this weekend to see what she'd do.

I was rather unimpressed by the fact that the ammo misfed twice on me, getting hung up unless the magazine was tilted toward the rear. I was using my Sig polymer mags and Winchester whitebox 5.56 ammo. The nose of the ammo was catching because the mag was tilted forward and wasn't producing enough angle to properly feed.

I'm going back up to SOG this weekend, I'll ask if they've run into any other issues like this...
