ANCHORAGE, Alaska - On an icy winter day when the sun barely rose higher than the peaks of the Chugach Mountains, one store in a sleepy strip mall near the airport was abuzz with activity. The hand-lettered cardboard sign outside told the story: Alaska's First Halal Grocery.
Inside, owner Lamin Jobarteh was pricing bottles of bright-orange palm oil, a product he was sure would fly off the shelves as soon as he called the Nigerians in town to let them know it had arrived. A group of Somali women in brightly colored headscarves looked through a gleaming white freezer for cubed bone-in goat meat.
Anchorage is now home to nearly 4,000 Muslims, up from a hundred or so when Jobarteh, who hails from the West African nation of Gambia, arrived in Alaska to attend graduate school in the 1990s.
For years, he watched as the growing community ordered bulk shipments of Halal meat and specialty groceries from Seattle and Vancouver, Canada, the nearest cities where they were available.
"I've seen the demand for a long time," he said. "Muslim people cannot live without Halal food, and it's expensive to ship it up.
Halal, meaning "lawful" or "permissible" in Arabic, is a term for food that is prepared according to Islamic dietary law. Animals must be slaughtered following Quranic guidelines and in the name of Allah.
In December, Jobarteh left his career as a business banker to open Alaska Halal Grocery.
The white-walled shop carries familiar products like Cheetos and Heinz ketchup, but also sells roti bread, fufu flour, a West African cassava-based staple used to make a starchy, dumpling-like dish, and soft Indian paneer cheese. You can get whole cardamom pods and spices for Bombay biryani, a famed Indian dish, along with a Big Texas brand cinnamon roll or a root beer.
Aside from the stocked goods, Jobarteh drives to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to preside over the Islamically correct butchering of animals at a slaughterhouse in Palmer once a week or so. His shop features a gleaming stainless steel kitchen in the back room where he can prepare custom orders of meat for families.
"I had no experience in butchering or being a grocer before," Jobareth says. "This is all a new skill for me."
Anchorage's Muslim community is growing in number as well as visibility, says Dr. Regina Boisclair, the Cardinal Newman Chair of Catholic Theology at Alaska Pacific University. She has tracked religious diversity in Anchorage for years.
Thirteen years ago, the community was small and fractured into two factions that were barely speaking to each other. But in the past few years, the Muslim community has gained strong leadership and has "come into its own."
Across the parking lot from Alaska Halal Grocery is the Islamic Community Center of Anchorage, a small rented space where prayer services, classes and lectures are currently held.
That won't be home for long, Jobareth says.
In 2007, the community paid $600,000 for a 70-acre piece of land in South Anchorage on which they plan to build the state's first mosque. They raised nearly $1 million from their own community and other U.S. groups - some were surprised to hear there were any Muslims at all in Alaska.
They plan to break ground on the first phase of the planned mosque, school and educational center during the short construction season this summer, an effort that received attention on international news network Al-Jazeera.
Boisclair says the Halal grocery store and the planned mosque "will solidify the community."
Alaska's isolation leads to diversity you might not find in other communities, Jobarteh says. The Anchorage masjid, or place of worship, draws people with roots in Albania, Somalia, Gambia, Mali, Pakistan, Palestine, Bangladesh, American converts and others.
"In other places you'd have a Somalian masjid, a Pakistani masjid, and on and on," he said.
Jobarteh, who left Gambia after a military coup destabilized the country, says that Alaskan Muslims - some resettled by refugee programs, some drawn to high-paying science and engineering jobs - have one thing in common: they want to raise families in a safe, free place.
For many of the Alaska Halal Groceries customers, who have left places with oppressive regimes, Alaska is a breath of fresh, cold air.
Along with a sense of safety, Jobarteh says that Alaskan Muslims have been largely welcomed by the community at large, a situation that hasn't always been the case for some members who've lived in other American cities post-9-11. Alaskans seem to value a live-and-let-live approach, Jobarteh says, and that includes religious tolerance.

The simple fact is there are those willing to warp "Gods" message (and I use the word collectively for all religions-ideaologies) and bend it to suit their own evil desires in all religions, there are in all religions those willing to use terror as a tool to acheive their goals. Might I point out as well that there are between approximately 1.5 and 1.7 BILLION muslims around the world today, yes thats with a B the overwhelming majority of them are not Jihadists nor terrorists. The US bombed the group’s positions during the 2003 offensive into Iraq. 10/30/97 Yemen: Al-Sha'if tribesmen kidnapped a U.S. businessman near Sanaa. They wanted the release of two fellow tribesmen. They released the hostage on 11/27. 11/12/97 Pakistan: 2 gunmen murdered 4 American auditors from Union Texas Petroleum Corp. and their Pakistani driver near the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi. The Islamic Revolutionary Council claimed responsibility in a call to the U.S. Consulate in Karachi. In a letter to Pakistani newspapers, the Aimal Khufia Action Committee also claimed responsibility. 11/17/97 Egypt: Luxor, 58 Tourists (68 total) massacred. Responsibility probably belongs to Gamaat-al-Islamiya, “Islamic Jihad,” connected to Al Qaeda. In 1998 a member, Mohamed Abid Abdel Aal, was extradited to Egypt from Ecuador. Ayman al-Zawahiri (sentenced to death in absentia in Egypt 1999, and hiding in Afghanistan, mentor to Osama bin Laden) was likely the leader. Shayk Omar Abdel Rahmann, spiritual advisor to Islamic Jihad, issued a fatwa sanctioning the killings. He had been exiled to the US from Egypt, implicated in the 1993 WTC bombing, and imprisoned for other bombings. In October 1997 a major terrorist meeting was held in Tehran, with over 20 Islamic and a few non-Muslim groups. Two suicide car bombs outside the Baghdad Hotel. 6 killed and 32 wounded. 10/15/03 Gaza Strip. A remote-controlled bomb exploded under a U.S. diplomatic convoy. 3 security guards killed; 1 wounded. They were on their way to interview Palestinian candidates for Fulbright scholarships in the US. Arafat condemned the attack; Palestinian militant groups denied responsibility. Palestinian forces arrested several suspects. 10/26/03 Iraq. A rocket launcher killed 1 U.S. Army officer and wounded 17, including 11 Americans, at the al-Rashid Hotel in Baghdad. A Wave of suicide car bombings in Baghdad killed at least 35 and wounded at least 230. 4 were directed at police stations, the 5th at the International Red Cross headquarters, where at least 12 persons were killed. A 6th attack failed, the bomber was wounded and captured. The captured bomber was a Syrian national and carried a Syrian passport. 11/8/03 Saudi Arabia. In Riyadh, a suicide car bombing in the Muhaya residential compound killed 17 and wounded 122, including 4 Americans. Al-Qaeda was probably responsible. 11/12/03 Iraq. A suicide truck bomb destroyed the Italian military police headquarters in Nasiriyah, killing 18 Italians and 11 Iraqis, and wounding at least 100. 11/15/03 Turkey. 2 Synagogue Bombings in Istanbul killed 25 and wounded at least 300. A suicide car bomb attack on the Kurdish Interior Ministry in Irbil killed 5 and wounded 101. 12/25/03 Pakistan. 2 suicide truck bombers killed 14 as President Musharraf’s motorcade passed through Rawalpindi. I have a personal beef with Islam as two of those Marines that were killed in Beirut on 23-OCT-1983 were close friends of mine. There is nothing quite like trying to console your Girlfriend while she's sobbing uncontrollably along with the rest of her family after hearing her brother (whom I grew up with BTW) was just blown to bits in a cowardly attack. Do I have a vendetta against Muslims?

Honest Work? Any man or woman for that matter worth their salt wants to earn their own way in this world and I have found that to be true every place I have been in this world, and I will agree with you up to a Point that there are most definately people in this world that aren't worth the shot and powder it would take to blow their worthless a$$e$ square back to hell where they came from. Freedom to Worship as you choose? Isn't that a large part of why this nation was founded? Don't you think every soul is entitled to pray to whatever God they embrace or even not worship at all if they so choose, it's part of what we're defending here.
Naive? Not at all my friend I have been around this old world enough times to know the evil people can do, at the same time I have also seen good decent people and the majority of those have a wealth of goodness and kindness and generosity in them. And considering some of the circumstances under which some lived those traits have humbled me greatly. That my friend was a very nice read and thank you! Like you, I won't sacrifice my morals or beliefs either. I commend you for that as MANY people will give them up in a heartbeat. As far as who you are? I am relieved you cleared that up. I don't exactly like the "hippy" types or get along with them as I'm not a "tolerant" person (PC version of "tolerant") anyway.
I think the difference in opinions between you and I are simply age. You sound like you're perhaps a bit older and wiser than I. Someone who has had time to set back and "review" life a bit. As I'm still neck deep involved in combatives/counter terrorism training and will be for quite some time, I'm not afforded that luxury yet. I'm still very quick to pick up a sword and go to battle without asking the important questions. Probably in my current situation, it's best that way. Maybe someday I can set back and re-evaluate life as you seem to have done. I admire people who have been able to do that (and a bit envious of them too, I might add ).
As far as "Holy war" goes, You're absolutely right. It's a cover-up for absolute, un restrained evil which in itself could be considered a type of "Holy war" (I consider it as such). The important thing is that the soldiers believe it and train accordingly and most of those "Idiots" over there believe it. I think they see it as a label which does make it easier to prepare for. As for myself? Yes, Holy war. Ultimate good against evil. I don't think the average American can grasp the vast expanse of what pure evil is or what it is capable of (although, some can).

I'm not sure I could live with it or even want peace. I believe peace leads to complacency and there will ALWAYS be someone out there to take advantage of that. Besides that, I think I'd become very bored with life. I don't expect peace until I get to go home to the Lord. In the meantime, I stay vigilant, I try and stay morally, mentally and physically strong and fit and try to train on the cutting edge.

Draganov My friend I regret in the deepest part of my soul this task has fallen to you, Those in my generation should have dealt with this long ago, but as they say warfare is a young mans game and I am by no stretch of imagination a young man anymore yet I would gladly go and demonstrate to our foes exactly who we are as a nation and people, and to those eager for peace exactly what we are willing to give for peace. I am sorry you don't or can't accept that some decent measure of peace is possible and perhaps you are right in that it may build complacency. But people deserve peace an opportunity to grow and build without fear without hurt that is why we were made > Innocents need our strength to protect them, Thank You for your service , Thank you for your sacrifice and most of all Thank you for your heart and compassion. I do believe in the end you and I are not all that different. But while it may seem to be a plea from a forgotten generation but give Peace a chance and to those who threaten it we shall always be there under arms to protect the innocent and try as best we are able with our strength to restore peace so that decent folks of all stripes can proceed with their lives as they rightfully should. the ones who are arriving from 3rd world war ton holes, are probably grateful and want to assimilate and live the American dream. their kids will be encouraged to lean english and play football.
The ones who are succesfull will assimilate, some, however a generation or two down will not. they will be disenfranchised. these may become the future Richard reeds etc.
while the community is still small and not feeling threatened is the time to reach out and off a hand of friendship and understanding. It's also much easier to see if something weird is going on.

Yes, I regret it also but I don't hold you, or others like you accountable, it's just the way it is. I'm perpetuating it with my kids too unfortunately. However, they're the ones who will have to deal with it. I just want to make sure they're equipped to do so. I can only hope that our children will put an end to the shame of letting it go this far. I think about this every night when my 11yr old daughter wants me to say prayers with her and I tuck her in. I think about it also when my always overly happy 15 yr old daughter wants me to tuck her in as well. What kind of world am I leaving them? I have the worlds best teenagers but I also know what they're both capable of and it scares the hell out of me that they have to be this way. I don't think they have any regrets about it as they seem to enjoy the training. I do however. It's a shameful thing when a little girl has to know how to take the life of another human being, but that's the way it is.
It's a tough thing to see a sweet, innocent little girl turn in to a cunning predator like flipping a light switch off and on. My youngest one asked me if there really were such things as monsters once. I told her there were and that's why daddy teaches them how to fight and survive, I've seen what those monsters do to children .
Perhaps they're happy because they are confident they can take care of themselves, I'd like to think so. Perhaps they'll hate me when they're older for it, I dunno. I hope as they get older that they see the same value in it that they do now.
Give peace a chance? I can't.... Not now, maybe not in my lifetime, maybe someday. I hope my kids (and others like them) can set the world strait so they can.
I don't think I'd do well with peace, at least not right now. It's not the right time. I don't trust it unfortunately.

Petrol, that is an outstanding attitude you have and you're to be commended for it. You make a VERY valid point, unfortunately, I'm not a diplomat and I just can't get past the mistrust to be the one to stick my hand out, nor do I want to be at this point in time. I wish sometimes that I could. I'm not sure I'm to be trusted in a situation like that, one wrong move and it's over. I train "predators" for a living (someone has to do it) and it's not in my character to stick my hand out to the enemy.
I really don't want everyone to think I'm some sort of "loose cannon" or "lunatic" or something, I most assuredly am not. I just believe in telling the truth about how I view things and not "sugar coating". I'm just VEEEERY concerned and cautious.
