Sheriff Maketa, El Paso County, not seeking a third term

For those in El Paso County, This effects you. This news probably has limited draw on a forum as diverse as we are, however there may be a few people on here who are in the area and I think it is noteable.

Sheriff Terry Maketa will not be running again in November. Terry Maketa is a good sheriff, notably standing up for our rights and supporting concealed carry, and would most likely would have been elected again. He would have had my vote at least. I would love to know if he has any thoughts on who his successor should be. I don't know if he can give his endorsement for anyone, but if I hear anything on it I will post it.

As a former Colorado Springs resident, I gotta say I hate to see him go he was a good Sheriff and did a lot for gun owners and they're rights. I'm sure the Rampart Range SNAFU didn't hurt helping him decide not to run again.

Smile He Has My Vote

Yes; quite a shame to loose someone who ''believes''; that criminals are criminals; needing to treated as such.

He may have a skeleton in the closet; he may not be ''politically correct enough'' We really will not know for awhile; why we loose someone this strong.

He would still carry my vote

After I posted this, some things have happened.
First, Miketa went to a coalition meeting a few weeks after I posted this message. He was asked by the locals to stay and run a third time. I was a little surprised that he agreed.

His opponent is Chief Jake, the Monument Police Chief. This guy is not out, he has some good ideas and appears competent. Expect to see more of him in the future. El Paso County is pretty darn lucky to have two extremely viable candidates.

John Anderson, who preceded Maketa, was prevented from running for a third term. CO had a two term limit. When did that change???
I left there in 99 when I retired form the CSPD. John is a personal friend of mine, as in Maketa's father.

Not in the Springs myself but in the news coverage area. Glad to see he's running again. A GOOD sheriff is priceless.
