Unarmed Armed Guard on Guard Duty

This brought a little smile to my dial yesterday.

I drove past the main gate of the National Police Commando camp out here where I'm working, in West Africa; these guys are the "Elite" Police Commando Tactical guys and seem to be considered a fair bit above the average Soldier or Policeman. They swagger about trying to emulate the French Legionaires that we have here, with really smart uniforms and all wearing a rope belt with a couple of caribiner clips on so there's no mistaking them!!!
Well these guys usually have two gate guards armed with AK47's but yesterday I noticed that one was armed with a PKM, looking very mean and businesslike. Only thing was, not an ammo belt, box or ammo can to be seen anywhere!
Now I wonder, does the guy with the AK have a loaded mag?
Had the guy with the PKM mucked up somehow and got it to carry all day as a punishment duty? Has all their 7.62x54 ammo been sold off Mosin owners in the States?
Can these "Elite" police be trusted with ammunition?

Next time I go past I'll stop and see if he'll sell it to me.

We had a unit of contracted Kenyan Force Protection personnel at Camp Fallujah. They too were dressed smartly in khaki BDU/DCU-type uniforms with some smart looking broad brimmed bush hats when they were not wearing dark gray Kevlar helmets and body armor. They were armed with new 5.56mm M4s. Before I arrived in western Iraq, I heard that a speeding contractor’s vehicle was practically shot to pieces from the grill to the base of the windshield by a Kenyan Force Protection sentry as the vehicle approached a gate. Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but the badly shaken driver was approached by the Kenyan who said in deep, slow, heavily accented English, "In the future, you must slow down and approach slowly for your own safety sir. Please have a good day."

I have a friend whose family lived in Romania for 6 years right after the fall of communism. He told me that the guards and policemen that you saw everywhere, only sometimes had ammo. Sergeants, officers, and others who had earned trust got loaded mags, but most guys didn't. The deterrent factor is that you shouldn't know who does and who doesn't!

Haven't seen anybody there since with the PKM, just the usual guys with the AK's. Buying that sort of thing is easy here, hard part is taking it home on the Plane! Lotsa guys with illegal ones buy their ammo from the cops & army. (Cops here don't carry pistols, just AK's)
