Question How was the Model 91 hand guard attached....

to the barrel? I've noticed that a lot of the rifles for sale don't have the hand guard and from looking at pics It looks like the hand guard didn't go under the barrel bands. Or does it? If it doesn't is there a spring clip or something on the underside? Here is a link to an auction to one. Thanks for any info!

The top handguard of an M91 has tabs that slip under the barrel bands. Russian/Soviet M91

Finding a replacement upper hand guard may be a trick but that is a nice and very collectible rifle!

I think his "Spanish Civil War" story is Possibly Bogus...These Rifles were built for Russian Contract Long after the first Civil war and almost 20 years before the Second SCW...He offers No documentation so I take it with a grain of salt.
Where are the "Spanish Markings "?
The Soviets did supply a few MN Rifles to the Republicans of Spain , But I'm Skeptical about a Remington ...

Nice looking Remmington.
The bolt, butt plate and rear sling swivel have been replaced.
He didnt show the rear sight close up but it looks like arshins.
I love the original finish. Look at where you hold the neck of the straight stock.
Worn from all the hands that held it. Hard to fake that.
The original 91's didnt have top handguards. The later ones did. So not having a top guard is not all that uncommon.

Davey Joe seems to know his stuff from my view. I have traded with him a couple of times.

He's basing his SCW opinion on the heavy sling swivels and other features, not that it has Spanish markings.

The Soviets did send the then obsolete M91s as aid to the Spanish communists. We typically associate brand spanking new 91/30s being SCW rifles.

On the top handguard. There are wood tabs at both ends of it that fit under the barrel bands. The No.1 type bands had no cutouts to hold the handguard in place. The No.2 bands had cutouts for it.

Spanish Stocked 1916 Remington M91
Sorry Ken ,
But I am skeptical without proof....Or Proof Marks .
Plus the Sling Swivels Look like Reproductions to me that were hammered in place , the originals were squeezed closed with a tool.
Caveat Emptor...

Pretty cool rifle. Id pay up to maybe $300 not more than that.
It is the san serif style Remmington. With a serial number thats way up there. With a late model like that it would most likely have had a top handguard.
The sling swivels just dont look right to me at all.
Anyway cool to look at.

They had one, a Finn Capture 1917 Remington at the local gun show last month. The thing that kept me from buying it was the crack that extended from the bottom of the butt, all the way down the long axis of the gun, right to the nosecap.
