given the phenominal popularity of Russian bolt action rifles over the past several years I am really surprised at the lack of aftermarket items such as triggers, barrels, etc. for these guns.
I though by now a thriving aftermarket would exist.
In case you misinterpreted my post, I think you SHOULD do it, because you can and it would be fun. I'm just warning you that it will be expensive and will be a lot of waiting if you want it done RIGHT, so that you're not disappointed in the end result compared to your investment.
And I'm just warning him that he could be spending large amounts of cash for maybe not all that much improvement. If you want a tackdriver, buy a tackdriver.

People think I'm paranoid because I own guns. If I own guns, what do I have to be paranoid about?
There have been a LOT of high end competion rifles built off a K98 Mauser action taken from a service rifle. Not to mention the 03 action or on a simple Remington 700 action. Improved accuracy comes from a lot of factors other than what the action started as.
So, if the gentleman has the time, money and ambition....go for it and post pictures! I think he just might get a great target rifle out of it if done correctly!

Vostok brand Target rifle based on a Mosin Nagant action from a 1965 Italian gun catalog
Mosin–Nagants have been exported from Finland since the 1960s as its military modernized and decommissioned the rifles. Most of these ended up in the hands of private collectors in the West.
In Russia the Mosin Nagant action has been used to produce a limited number of commercial rifles, the most famous are the Vostok brand target rifles exported in Europe in the 1960s and 70's chambered in the standard 7.62x54mmR round and in 6.5x54mmR, a necked down version of the original cartridge designed for long range target shooting.

Just do s search for "Vostok 7.62", you'll see it.
Actually, it's not a long range rifle, it was used for biathlon in 1960s and 70s., abd 6.5x54R version was used for shooting in "running boar" and "running deer"
competitons at 300 meters.
When they used MN receivers to make those, receivers were selected from a bunch of a new ones.
