Standard handguard

OK... ok.... Where can I find an original style, plain Jane AR15/M16 handguard. I am missing that. I don't want rails or tacticrap. Just an original handguard.

Any help appreciated.

Heres the breakdown:

After looking at the handguards that come with the uppers, I decided they were fine.

All parts are Smith and Wesson and CA legal:

Lower $180 W/BB (S&W)
Upper $640 5.56 (S&W)
Stock $90
Parts kit $80 (S&W)
DROS $35
Tax about $100

Total = $1125

(Timiney match grade trigger next month $180)

I will also be purchasing a 6.8 SPC upper ($800) to use on it also. I'll use that to build a second AR this summer. I wanted a 6.5 Grendel upper, but I'd need to change magazines.

Any thoughts??

Dragunov, I'm not trying to on a parade or anything man, but have you considered just buying one pre-built? for around 1100 dollars I know Rock River sells a ton of different 5.56 rifles....and I'm sure some others do as well.

Just a thought?.....

I have. As a matter of fact I passed on a Stag not too long ago for $1000 but it was used. Rock River lowers are VerBOTIN in the Peoples Repooblik.

The way I figure it an off list lower here in Kaliforniastan is gonna cost a little more unfortunately. I wanted a new rifle with a 20" barrel. Smith and Wesson is about as good as it gets in a trusted name firearm out here. I wasn't just looking for an inexpensive rifle, I was also looking at quality. I could get a Stag, or a Del-Ton, for about $200 cheaper. but as the S&W is something I know to be quality and the upper has a better fit and finish than the others I looked at.

The nice thing about this rifle is that out of the ones I looked at that he had assembled, the Smith and Wesson was tightest and seemed to just be a better quality of firearm than the others. It was also a little heavier. The barrel was a little heavier and the lower seemed to be a much better quality than the others. I based my decision on that criteria alone in an unbiased comparison. I would like any of the others and they would all suit my purposes, but the S&W stood out just a little more than the rest.

As all the parts are S&W, I figured it offered the best bang for my buck, even if it was a few more of 'em. I was particularly impressed with the three and a half pound S&W trigger! It was a light, crisp single stage that felt nearly as good as the $185 Timiney trigger on the other one.

You made a very good observation and you are right. However, the idea of "rolling your own" just sets right with me.

Gotta hand it to ya there, nothing like crafting something yourself. As for California, that was my mistake, I didn't notice where you were located. However, after reading about all the SH$# you Californians have to go through I am thankful that I'm a Texan!
