freshly stripped...

freshly stripped, laminated MN M44 stock... this puppy is gonna be HOT

it will just need a light sanding... I'm going to try red oak as opposed to the red mahogany. the red mahogany on my first one was more brown than that beautiful Soviet orange...

Looking good Redbaron, I put a hand rubbed oil finish on my lammy and
followed that with some wood paste wax. It turned out as smooth as glass.

Izzy Jaecks's Photos - Restoring a Mosin Nagant M44 | Facebook

if the above link works, it's where I'm going to be keeping more photos of the process on my facebook page. And yes... my name is Izzy... which MN's do you think *I* prefer?

for stripper I just used Klean-Strip®

I didn't let it sit long enough after the first application, so I needed to do a second application... scrubbed it off with a green scotch brite pad in the bath tub.

I REALLY want to sand it down and apply the stain right NOW, but I know it has to properly dry first... so that's my day after work tomorrow

Wow I like this Idea of "freshly stripped" Mosin Nagants, postem in here after they have been stripped and slide on over to the refinished mosin nagants after they are finished, what a concept.Or maybe not. Dont mean to impose. Enjoy, Cant wait to see her when shes done, that detail in that lamanate is quite exquisite and should be one of the finer looking stocks anyone has seen.

so... I'm guessing the sight is offset because of the bayonet?

Uhh, if something is shooting right, you adjust the sight to the left....

Optimally, the two little lines on the front sight should be lined up with one another, if they aren't they either changed the sight when it was refurbed or its shifted since it was made.

Yep that is right sorry about that its just the opposite of what I said apparently. Oops my bad. Moving the front sight to the left would force the rear sight to the left therefore turning the front end of the barrel to the right.

The forward sight should be "centered". then the rear adjusted to bring the rifle "in".

well the rifle is currently in pieces as I work on the stock, so I've not shot it at all yet

I know that the bayonet affects sighting, so I was curious if the front sight was skewed because of that or if it's simply not where it belongs...

not bothering yet with photos while the stain is still wet, but I'm gonna have to say my new favorite stain combo is red oak followed by yellow oak (day in between to dry)... it's not going to look EXACTLY like the original Soviet orange shellac, but it's going to come closer than the first stock I did

You know what, after further review , it looks as if the sight is not where it is supposed to be, the notch lines are not lining up.

one coat red oak, two coats yellow oak, one coat so far of BLO.

where the layers meet, it's almost iridescent...

This stock you have here is really unique, I have not seen one quite like it. I think all lammys look good usually but its just really defined in this one. Good job!

If this has been said before and I missed seeing it I am sorry for the repeat.

In looking at this picture the front sight seems to have been knocked to the side. There is a witness mark that is marked on the front of the sight that you see in the picture that is lined up when it was sighted in. The witness mark on your rifle is way to the left as looking at your picture. I would drift the front sight to line up those two marks then extend the bayonet and test fire.

One of my 91/30s had a sight that was knocked off and it shot way to the left until I lined up that long witness mark. Then it shot straight.

You will have to decide if you want to shoot with the bayonet extended or folded. It changes where your bullet ends up. Once your sight is adjusted for one or the other stick with it or you will end up doing it again.

Great looking stock, by the way!
