i was looking to shoot steel with my pistol 9mm and 45 . can you just shoot up close 10 yrds or more with regular hp ammo or do you ned the cast lead bullets? just wondering and also can i do this with my wasr 10 chambered in 7.62x39 from a greater distance of course... thank you
Use soft lead - less chance of ricochet. I like spinner targets for my .22 and Nagant handguns. I keep distance no closer than 25 yards.
DO NOT use jacketd or FMJ! It can ricochet back to you, or it can damage the steel targets.
If I was going to shoot steel at VERY close range I would buy a box or 2 of frangible ammo. Second choice would be lead. I caught a round of 230gr hardball in the crotch once that had ricochet off a steel plate!!!! Ask me how it felt!!! I'm sure you can imagine.
Just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!
Sweet video,I wish he would have shot a mosin nagant instead of an sks though. I would like to see how the 7.62x54r stacked up against the .308 and .223. Im guessing(hopeing) it would be similar to the .308
i was hunting a frangible or maybe soft tip or even a cast im not looking to go off shooting steel with a factory fmj...just want the best opinions ... in locateing the best round at the best price....
We had some fellers at our outdoor range a couple years back - they had welded up some BIG swinger targets, set them at 50 yards, then set to shooting them with Mosins.
That target had all paddles shot off, and many holes through the steel!
Not safe at all.
Our berm bunkers have steel plate on the front edges of the concrete walls, to protect the bunkers. That steel is pocked with bullet holes. We can hear the 'ring' of a hit on the steel. .223 craters it, .30 cal SP might crater, but FMJ punches through. .50BMG is not allowed.
Had a buddy once shoot a full CO2 cartridge with his .22 rifle - distance about 25 yards. The cartridge too off like a rocket and came back, whacked him in the chest! I made sure he was okay, then laughed at him - first time we'd seen a target 'shoot back'! Be careful out there!
