New CZ USA Mallard O/U Shotgun

I'll start by saying I'm not a shotgun expert. I just wanted to share thoughts on a new gun. Last weekend I bought a CZ USA Mallard shotgun primarily for my son who just joined a high school trap team. I have no prior experience with CZ USA and had not even heard of the brand until last weekend. They're made in Turkey by Huglu, I think. Although it isn't the perfect gun for trap shooting, it is a significant step up from the 870 Express he had been using. Just thought I'd report now that we have a couple hundred rounds through it. So far we are very impressed with the gun, especially for 500 bucks new. The fit and finish are impressive compared to the Stoeger Competition and the Mossberg Silver which were in that price range. The gun is not a feather-weight O/U like some, but it's lighter than the Stoeger by far. This gun just feels great and my son has improved notably using it at practice. Of course we have our eye on a few higher end brands if we can ever afford to step up. For now, the Mallard is turning out to be a good choice. Here are a few pictures.

Thanks for sharing. I have wanted to get a CZ double barrel for quite some time. I have never handled one but I would be interested in both the sxs and the over/under models. Good to hear from someone that owns one, thanks for posting! Enjoyed the pics as well.

No problem. I figured there may be other people that don't have a pile of money that are looking for a good gun. Scheels has pretty good selection and price if you're in the Coralville area. Good luck.

While I have been to that scheels store I am mid way between Omaha and Des Moines so I would likely check out either of those two stores since they are closer. I will have to pay more attention next time I am there so I can at least handel a CZ double barrel once. My buddy has the Stoger over/under and it is okay but the CZ has really peaked my interest.

What gauge did you go with? I have the same model in 20 gauge great little gun, and looks good for the price of it.

Thanks. Although I haven't owned an O/U before, I've been preaching to my son to be careful opening and closing it.

I'm sure they have comparable prices. Maybe this weather will start to be tolerable one of these days.

Congrats and a thought

If your son develops the expertise needed to do well with this gun then I just want to say buying a gun for an extra thousand or so may not result in much, if any, gain.

Sometimes gemstones can be found in unexpected places.

You're probably right. In fact, he probably could have continued to use our 870. However, I have this problem of buying new toys.
