Need some help with gun laws

hi, there is a law stating that you have to be the age of 21 to purchase a handgun at a gun store, but 18 to purchase a gun from a private sale.

if i purchase from a private sales how do i transfer my name to the gun since its registered to the former owner?

is it legal for me to take it to the range and shoot it?

how does the private sales work, does that person have to have a license to sell it to me or do i have to have anything to buy it from him other than being 18+? *i have not been convicted or had any felony

basicly i want to buy and own a handgun legally soon
telling me how to do so would help

thanks help appreciated

You should never take someone's word for it, but check it out yourself. On above web site you can find the gun laws for your state. But, may need to check federal laws as well. Some time back, there was a thread by a person who as under 21 complaining that Walmart would not sell him 9mm ammo even though he lied to them & told them it was for a rifle because it is legal for 18 year olds to buy rifle ammo. A parent or a legal guardian can legally buy pistol ammo for a minor. Some ammo manufacturers state that it's illegal to sell to anyone under 21, right on the box, but not all.

Federal law states that you may not purchase a handgun if you are under 21. Makes no difference if it is from a dealer or from a private individual. State law does not change this. You may POSSESS a handgun if you are 18 or older. It must have been given to you by someone that did not require a transfer from a licensed dealer or a private individual (ie, legitimate gift).

There is no "registration" of firearms in this country (yet) so you don't have to transfer your name to the gun. If you purchase from a dealer, you must complete an ATF form 4473 but from an individual there is no paperwork at all unless the seller wants your name and address for his own records.

If you legally acquire the gun, then of course you can legally take it to a range and shoot it. Know your state and local laws regarding transporting a handgun also. Hope this helps you.

TAKE NO ONES WORD FOR IT. FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF.

Might I suggest clicking the link below and then clicking on your state and then readin the laws for yourself. I don;t say that in a mean way or to be mean or a jerk. But if you do something wrong or listen to someone else it'll be you that gets in trouble, that possibly loses your gun rights and that could possibly go to jail?

Federal Law states that you may NOT purchase a Handgun if you are under 21 FROM A LICENSED FFL DEALER...They do not address sales between Individuals because they Have NO Power to regulate INDIVIDUAL SALES.
That is then something that falls to state Law and in most states pretty much unregulated except for NY , Commiefornia, NJ, Delaware. If State Law allows an 18 yr old to possess a handgun, they can buy it legally from an individual ,as long as both are residents of the same state, get a receipt to show they bought it , and go on about their business...
