My pappy used to tan my hide with a belt once in a while.

There are many ways to tan hides...with or without the Hair on...I use alum and salt tan followed by a light smoking for a Bear hide that will hang on the wall, If it needs to be softened , I use Softol and "Break" the hide...
There is also Chrome Tanning, brain tanning, vegetable tanning , Etc...
A lot of times it is cheaper and a better job to send hides out to a professional Tannery and have them done...
A Vegetable tanned leather should be used for guns and knives holsters and sheaths , as an acid tanned hide can damage the finish and cause rusting..
