10/22 barrel question...

Are the 10/22 semi auto and the 77/22 bolt action barrels the same?? Will they work on either receiver, I noticed that they look identical to each other or is their some difference...Seen a nice looking 77/22 barrel for sale and just wondered..

I have read that you need to use a shim for a 77 barrel to work in a 10/22

That is almost correct. A shim is required to be able to use a 10/22 barrel in a 77 Mark II receiver. The shim enables the two screw clamp to snugly seat the barrel into the receiver.

this is almost correct, there is a barrel shim and a v-block shim, both are needed, you can get them from Rimfire Technologies. I used one of these kits, last summer with a Green Mountain Barrel, there is a lot of tuning that is needed to get everything just right. The 77/22 chamber is much tighter than a 10/22, which produces better accuracy, but also the need to keep the chamber a lot cleaner, and keep in mind that unfired round will not extract most of the time...here is a link to the shim kit, and a pic of the rig I built...

Well,

you have some good advice. It might be a good course of action for you to consider one of the better quality aftermarket 10/22 barrels for your needs.

Best wishes.
