Any reviews on Leupold

Any reviews on the Leupold Mark4 LR/T 6.5-20X50MM Illuminated TMR? I have been looking for a scope for 338-378 Weatherby and a 30-378 Weatherby. Have it narrowed to the Leupold and the Nightforce. I just cant see the extra $500.00 for the Nightforce. Any input welcome.

if you've got the money, the nightforce is twice the scope of anything with the leupold name on it.

^ That may be so, (I don't know personally). But for the average user, are you going to use either to their full potential? If not, got with the more economical choice. Leupold has a well established name.

I have Leupold scopes on all my "serious" rifles. I have shot with a Night Force scope, on a friend's rifle. I found the Night Force optics to be excellent. However, the image, at full magnification, seemed less crisp than I was used to from my Leupold scopes. The Night Force scope image also seemed to "wash out" more in bright sun light.

Worth $500 more? I didn't think so.

I don't own either but from what I know when I was researching scopes last year like a banshee, The Leupolds have come down in quality. They aren't even what they used to be three years ago. They may have a good name, but like a lot of everything else I have been seeing recently, the name doesn't seem to mean much, just what the product is that they can bring to the table. As of last year, Leupold was on my list of "do not buy!". It seemed to me that Bushnell was getting up there and Nikon was still a clearer optic. From what I learned, most scopes are now made in China. However, some of them still use glass that is made in Japan. The scopes with Japanese made glass will rival the German made glass and are what you should be looking for. If the glass is made in China, skip it.

If I were you, I would be looking all over the internet for all sorts of scope reviews on all of them. The Sniper's Hide forums are full of military and ex military guys and even some scope dealers that give reviews on their products. You will find a lot of opinions on optics from these guys. I am not a member of their forums, but there is a lot of good info on the site. Also, go to a gunstore or someplace that carries a wide range of optics and just start looking through them all. I found a few Nikons that were clearer than Zeiss and Leupold.

I don't know about Leupold scopes being made in China but I've heard they're using Chinese glass.

I think you can call Leupold to confirm where there parts are made and assembled. If it is Chinese glass, I wouldn't touch it for a while.

I have been racking my brain reading reviews and looking through various scopes for a new rifle I'm putting together.
I have looked through several Leupold VX3-Mark 4,Zeiss Conquest,Nightforce,Bushnell Elite 6500,IOR Valdada,Sightron SIII,and Trijicon Accupoint. All are good scopes, have great glass and each has it's own different features that are nice.

If my wallet would allow it,I would go with the IOR Valdada. But I decided to go with the Sightron SIII 6-24X50 LRMD scope. The glass is just as clear/bright as any of the others, and it is known to have great repeatable turrets with 100" of windage/elevation adjustment for around $700-750 depending on where you shop.
