don't forget hawaii, who according to national geographic, is bracing for it's "biggest tsunami since the Alaskan earthquake of 1964."

This wave is traveling as fast as a jetliner, they are sounding sirens every hour as the homeless live on the beaches with very little communication. What's the speed of a jetliner?

I'm pretty sure Chile has much better building codes than Haiti did. Hopefully the human suffering will be less.

here's a little bit of info from the NOAA site...

How fast do tsunamis travel?
  • Tsunami velocity depends on the depth of water through which it travels (velocity equals the square root of the product of the water depth times the acceleration of gravity).
  • Tsunamis travel approximately 475 mph in 15,000 feet of water. In 100 feet of water the velocity drops to about 40 mph.
  • A tsunami travels from the central Aleutian Is. to Hawaii in about 5 hours and to California in about 6 hours, or from the Portugal coast to North Carolina in about 8.5 hours.

here's the link for more info on tsunamis...

Actually, the southern coast of AK is under a tsunami advisory. Which is quite different from a warning.

The Whitehouse Resident has aleady popped his ugly mug up on telly, letting The World know America stands ready to aid the Chileans. Guess we'll need another stimulus bill........

And think of all the CO2 that was released in this event....... Algore will be giddy........

Well,

it is now a few hours before whatever happens to Hawaii is scheduled to happen.

This may be a more horrific event than anticipated.

However, this is something geologists have known could happen for several decades.

Nothing to do but wait. It might also be possible this quake will set off a chain of quakes along its faultline. So, the situation may continue to develop in that region.

I will send a prayer for all concerned and affected.

I saw that the US has vowed to help the Chileans. With what money? Let's "Start at Home" as the HGTV channel loves to advertise. Plenty of people here need help, and I am sick of sending our hard-earned cash to other countries.

Help and donations originating from the US SHOULD NOT come in way of government aid. It should come from the people here! We should be able to send money to the cause at our liesure, at our will and with what we as individuals can afford. It should not be RIPPED from our pockets through taxation and government PORK!

There were MILLIONS of dollars donated through the Haiti instant message donation program. Let's continue that and let people who want to and can donate, donate, while letting people who can't afford it, keep their money for their needs.

How many surfers will be killed in Hawaii trying to ride the thing? Those guys are a little on the crazy side, but hopefully none of them will decide this is "the perfect wave". The energy will be spread over a fairly large span by the time it gets there, so maybe it won't be too big.

Reports say the Navy sent several ships out to sea - easier to ride it out there than be battered in port!
Half the world will feel this one!
