.Savage .300 ammo

I just bought a Savage Mod 99 in Savage.300 fromm an old friend. I have learned that is probably an EG made in 37 or 38. Cool old gun. I am looking to stock up on ammo since it seems kinda hard to find. I will hunt ( mostly hogs) with it, but will take good care of it. Any recommendations on what Kind of ammo to buy- Remmington, Federal, Winchester... and type for this rifle?

It's funny, I hear that some guys have a hard time finding 300 Savage ammo yet it's stocked to the ceiling in other parts of the country. I think it has alot to do with the area your in. I use factory Winchester loads in 150 gr power points, never had a problem with them, have used Rem 150 pointed soft points as well and they worked well to.

If it's an EG it'll have a schnoble tipped forearm.

Try all three and go with what you like or what does best. You probably wont find much difference in accuracy but might find a difference in poi.Personally I always liked Rem.core-lokt 150gr.In factory fodder that gives you about 2600fps and 2300ft lbs as I recall.Enough for any reasonable range on antelope or deer.(out to 300yds)A great rifle, glad you got it.Some models have collectors value.Post pics and Mooseman could tell you. ,,,sam.
