Stopped by the gun shop today.Owner said he was told by the ATF agent inspecting him that in Illinois pistol grip shotguns were going to be under the 72 hour wait like handguns instead of 24 hours like long guns.Black powder muzzle loading firearms will be yellow sheeted like anything else.
I had never heard of that before, or experienced it. I looked around a bit on the web, and google brought this thread up, so that didn't help either. I'd like to think that is wrong, but it's hard to say.

TeeRex,I think they way he was talking this an Illinois change in regulations not Federal.
hmm.... not sure. I believe local gun shop where I frequent has alot of pistol grip shotguns and dont think there was any differnt wait, but I have never bought one with just pistol grip on it... always installed them myself LOL

Yeah I was talking about the great state I lived in for years. It's hard to say what goofy stuff becomes law in IL.
LOL I tried to do a search on the ila.gov sight for bills in the legislature,I used guns in the subject search, there were 21 pages of them currently some where in the legislative process in both houses.A whole bunch of bill numbers per page.Good,bad,whatever.I gave up after about an hour of searching.
I guess if something happens it'll be on the ISRA web sight.
This latest FFL newsletter does refer to pistol grip shot guns, but only restricts their sales to adults, not to an extended wait period. Article starts on page 2.

The waiting period is state mandated.Since they are saying it's not a long gun by their definition because it's not designed to be fired from the shoulder and restrict sales to 21 and over that would make it what?Restricting sales to 21 and older is the same rules as handgun sales federally.I wonder if in this state dealers are taking that to mean a 72 hour wait like handgun sales or there has been a state regulation change?
Well,I questioned a friend of mine who is a prosecuter in the States Attorneys office about classifications. He told me the state statute mandating a 72 hour wait didn't really specify rifle, pistol,or whatever. It only states"of a size which may be concealed on the person".His opinion was that unless you were in Cook County most States Attorneys wouldn't even understand the question or would care less.LOL I guess that was an answer of sorts concerning pistol grip shotguns as long guns or handguns.
IMHO a pistol grip does not make a weapon designed to fire from the hip. What about pistol grips for turkey hunting, or thumb hole stocks?
Our armed forces use use weapons with pistol grips and they are still designed to be fired from the shoulder. I think something is easier a long arm or not. A rifle or shotgun with a pistol grip does not make it some kind of magic weapon that can be easily concealed.
I'm not trying to disagree with anyone posting on this thread, all the goofy laws that don't make sense get me a little heated.
LOL TeeRex,the more I dug into this the more confusing it got.Pistol grips on a firearm with a buttstock isn't what I'm refering to.As the statute says I'm talking about a long gun equiped with a pistol grip "in lieu of"a buttstock. That makes it not designed to be fired from the shoulder in other words by statute definition "other than a rifle or shotgun".Sales to under 21 years of age are prohibited.
When I looked into the 72 hour wait it gets thornier.Ok,with a pistol griped shotgun being called by statute definition "other than a rifle or shotgun" and handguns are "other than a rifle or shotgun" would the 72 hour wait apply.Well, the statue about the 72 hour wait doesn't say handguns,it says "of a size easily concealed on the person".WTF does that mean?LOL Depends on how your dressed I guess.T-shirts or trench coats would be the determining factor
I guess unless the state or ATF changes something, remember the Striker Shotguns one week legal next week an NFA weapon, it would depend on local laws.In Chicago they could pass an ordinance saying since it's "other than" it must be a pistol.Down here in the sticks they won't care and it will matter not at all.Just one of those things that could be used to hamper gun owners.
