Bull Nilgai

Does anyone have any experience hunting a Bull Nilgai?

Mainly, I'm curious to know if they are they good eatin'....but I couldn't really find much information about that on the 'Net.

I'm thinking about taking a trip during the "off" whitetail season for a big game hunt, and the Bull Nilgai sparked my interest.

They are tough as nails and hard to kill. Leave the 270 type guns home and bring a 35 Whelen at the least and a 338Win and up would be about right. Shoot big heavy bullets that break big hard bones.

I've got a .338 Win. Mag that I think would be up for the task! Now I just need to scrounge together enough money for a nice scope for it. Oh, and the coupla grand it'll cost to actually go on the hunt.

I'm thinking I'll schedule a hunt after my final exams are over in May. That would be a nice little getaway break from the work/school/family routine.

My friend these are tough tough animals while not on the scale of a cape buff in size they are equally as bad tempered and tough. They are tasty though but don't make the mistake as many make in trying to cook them like beef. The meat needs to be brined or soaked in whatever your favorite slightly acidic or lactose (meaning milk) sauce you care to use for several hours or best at least overnight... Use low slow, moist heat. A .30/06 throwing 220 grain solids would be my choice as a minimum. Bigger is beetr with these critters though. If you want it I'll give you my favorite brine recipe. Good luck on your hunt.
