Sight alignment issue

I seem to find it uncomfortable (for lack of a better term) to align front and rear sights. I am left-eye dominant and right handed. I can hit the target with no problems group is OK. But does anyone know of something I can do to make aligning front and rear sights easier or more efficient? If I use the front sight only I don't have this problem but that only works, for me, for about 10-15 feet.

Disclaimer - I am a relatively new shooter, so I still need practice.

Should I stop whining and shoot more or do I have a point?

Since you are a relatively new shooter it may be easier to simply start shooting left handed. I was getting pretty frustrated trying to show my wife how to aim properly and then found out she is just like you, left eye dominant and right handed. Once she switched over to shooting left handed her groups improved considerably.

I don't believe that left hand is going to be the way I go. I tried left for kicks and it took almost a minute just to get my grip right! I would never want to trust my life to it.

It all comes down to practice. Try to do a magazine or two left handed each time you hit the range and practice your grip at home (make sure it's EMPTY!) every once in a while. The only other idea I could give you to help shoot right handed would be to get a reflex sight.

Danny, try different colored sights.

First off, I am also left eye dominant and shoot right handed. Shooting pistol that is. Rifle, I shoot left handed.

But I find it easier and quicker to align my sights when they're different colors. Example, I put a set of Meprolight night sights on my GLOCK 35. The front is green and the rears are orange. Or maybe it's the other way around? lol. No matter as they're different.

But I'd add I also have no problem aligning them if they're not... But getting some sights with a different color in the front then in the rear might help you??? Good luck...

By the way, I tried to shoot left handed, but it didn't work because I'm also right hand dominant. And when I tried changing my dominant eye, I only ended up with a headache. lol

If you are cross-dominant, the solution is to put the gun in front of your dominant eye. Simple as that.

Close your non-dominant eye. Draw the pistol and point it at your target. Don’t bend your neck or anything else, just stand upright and aim the gun. Now open your non-dominant eye. Ta-da. You’ve done it!

There is nothing else to learn or unlearn.

I also wanted to ask if you were or are shooting or if this is happening because you're using just your right hand? That you're not using both hands? If that's the case, use both hands and you'll find it's easier to align them then just using your right hand and trying to line them up with your left eye.

The proper way and the way any good gun training facility, class or instructor will teach you is using both hands anyhow. Just watch the competition shooters when they shoot. If you have The Outdoor Channel, just tune in or record the shooting shows this Wednesday and you'll see this. Shows like Shooting Gallery, Shooing USA, Sighting in with Shooting USA, Impossible Shots, Best Defense, American Guardian and the like.

If you're using just your right hand or want to, try standing sideways; putting your left back, your body facing left with your right hand out front holding the gun. You might be able to line the sights up better that way as it will help your left eye line up better?

GM, I do use a two handed grip and it is correct (according to the 2 different instructors that have checked it). I will try reversing my stance moving my right side forward, therefore lining up my right side and eye. (I believe that is what you are describing)

Right-handed and my dominant eye was the right but then I had some eye surgeries that caused me to switch to the left eye. I'm still trying to figure out which foot should be forward.

Maybe I need to get a heavy-hitter like a .44 magnum to force me to find the most comfortable stance.

I think left foot forward while shooting with the right hand seems to work out the best for me.
