New Mosin Owner Question

Hey guys just picked up my new Mosin, Pictures to follow. Though I'm looking, what are my options to scope this thing? I like the strait out bolt so I was thinking a long eye relief scope? anyone have pics or can point me at an affordable one?

Thanks!
Mitchell

There's a dozen places to get them, just google it, you'll find plenty of options. Personally I am not a fan of the rear sight mounted scout scope option, I have 4 Mosins, one is a sniper and the rest are original, but that's just my taste.

I'd advise you to contact jmeck, one of our members who lives in Charlotte. He's designed a special scope mount that fits the MN without any gunsmithing. He also has one that replaces the rear ladder sight that's substantially better than the aluminum Picatinny rails you can get on eBay. Look him up on the members' list and PM him. The rear sight mount costs $69 and the wraparound, no gunsmithing sight mount costs $82, both prices including delivery.

The one that fits on the rear sight is of course long eye relief only. The wraparound can be set up for either LER or conventional scopes; but if you use a conventional scope you will have to get the bolt bent like a wartime MN sniper. Contact jmeck for all the details. I have a wraparound on Natasha, and I have another enroute to me for a wartime 91/30 I traded for, that will receive a 2-7x32 LER scope. You just can't beat a jmeck scope mount on a Mosin!

I use a leaper's off set .22 mount ($12) that fits on the dovetail after removing the rear sight base and a cheap ($45) NcStar 3-9x ler scope. I ordered them both from optics planet. They both work great.

I have never used one of Jmeck's mounts but I have read nothing but great things about them. If I were ever to get another and go the bent bolt route I would order a mount from Jmeck just on reputation alone.

JMECK!!!!! send him a PM on here and ask about pricing and scoping options. its a no drill and tap mount that goes over the reciever. but you do need a bent bolt, my advice is to go to the bolt man. just google him its eazy to find him and its only like 50 bucks. afer those two are taken care of you can get any scope you want.

Removal of the rear sight will reveal a narrow dovetail groove that the rear sight is drifted on to. It could either be soldered in place, held in place by a set screw, or have 2 pins holding it in place as well as a combination of previously mentioned attachment methods. You will need some high rise .22 scope rings, and a LER scope. The .22 scope rings are necessary for 2 reasons. 1. The narrow dovetail grooves will not accept standard rifle scope rings. 2. High mount is necessary if you leave the rifle in the original stock to allow clearance for barrel band and hand guard removal, as well as clearance of the barrel shank.

wow lot more options than I thought was out there!

also extra wow on a red-dot on a mosin... whoa!

Okay, here is another question for you guys, what is the difference between a regular scope and a LER scope? I was just going to go with the LER so I didn't have to drill and tap the receiver but since I have the option now. Whats the difference?

LER is a long eye relief. It allows you to mount the scope farther forward on a rifle, or on a pistol and be able to see a clear sight picture through the scope when it's 6 or 8 inches (or further) from your face. Whereas a conventional scope would mount on the receiver somewhere, the eye relief would be maybe a couple of inches. So basically eye relief is how far away your eye is from the scope, to get a good clear sight picture fully filling the scope.

okay just a peak lol

So yeah, it looks good. Barrel is pretty nasty looking... lands are worn pretty bad, and there is definitely pitting in there, but the lands are the same all the way to the crown, which is good shaped. Goon-a post a thread with more pics and stuff in a bit.

I dont think anyone will dig that idea.. but its your gun! heres a vid of what Iron_Colonel was saying. I have this setup on my mosin. and I can get on target fast with ler scope. I used a medium rise mount and it worked out perfect,
