jon in sagebrush what you look for isn't the rabbit but the rabbits eye, I used to hunt the high desert in Borrego Springs and the brush is much the same as your area. I learned fast the jacks and cotton tails blend so well with that brush the only out of place thing to look for is that bright black shiny eye of theirs the only thing they can't hide. Better luck next time (OBTW the properly terminology for a rabbits Burrow is called a "WARREN")

I was wandering, will they come out if it is really cold, say like in the 20's? Or will they wait till it gets warmer?
Are they active all day?
Thanks
Jonathan
Yes. They come out in the cold. That's how people track them in the snow (They don't hibernate.).
No. They're not active all day. If you want to see them come out, wait until sunset and, if they're there, you'll see them by the droves. You've only got about 10 minutes of light then though. That's why most of us hunt morning.
They're usually active all night (Hence, the reason you see them at sunset and sunrise.). To locate them by day, follow the hawks and hope to get lucky.
If your using a rifle you got to be sneaky, shotgun hunting you can be a little more noisy and still get a few. You don't need camo for bunnies but i normally have it on anyway. Hope this helps!

If you have a good beagle hound they will usually run that poor little bunny in a huge circle and bring him right back to where you are standing. All the bunny is concerned about at that point is the dog on his trail. Love watching a good dog work even when I don't intend to take the shot.
Well the way i did rabbit hunting was to kick woodpiles and walk around in brush with a 20 gauge. Eastern KS is full of cottontails, i try to spook them into running just so i can see them. You can pass really close to one but if you dont stop, he wont move, stopping can make the cottontails nervous and they may flee and present a shotgun opportunity.
Hide in the brush and make a noise like a carrot !! Works every time... If you hunt the sunrise, you will catch them sitting on a little elevation to warm themselves with the sun and to gain early warning. Look for their eyes. Walk slowly with the sun to your back. In inclement weather, look for them under the pines.
