Is there a difference in dates / arsenal of manufacture?

Hmm im not really sure. i wonder if it has anything to do with the longer one being a older, hex model. I too have a 1934 hex, its a tula though. maybe we could measure the legnths of the handgaurd and see if theyre the same, i dont know what that would prove, but itd be interesting to see if theyre the same.

Its seems like over a half an inch is a bit much for a fluke or just sloppy manufacutring.

So is the distance between the end of the barrel and the end of the handgaurd shorter on the one with the longer handgaurd?

I wouldnt call it sloppy manufacture id call it rushed. With the Wehrmacht breathing down their necks they had to rush production a bit so the soldiers would have weapons to fight with, often times leaving factory with no blue and no finish on the wood. They cut the corners where they could so they could spend time on the parts of the rifle that mattered.

The handgaurds didnt have to be perfect so pretty much they just cut em out, sanded them and threw them onto the gun.

While the Capt. is correct, a 1934 manufactured rifle wouldn't have that problem. It could have been some kind of refurb during the war, but it doesn't seem likely. Quite interesting. Pictures would be helpful.

odds are that stock is not original to the rifle. These rifles that are century imports are almost all Ukrainian refurbs. That stock could be from the 1920s to the 1970s.

What kind of sling slots does it have, that will clear things up real quick.

I agree alot of mixing of the parts. And a handguard who knows what it came off or who remade it. Just another fun thing in the world of mosins
