I think I found another option for scoping mosins

Special Dovetail Solid-Ring Short Scope Mount

I'm thinking, this mount, with a small dovetail mounted on the front of the receiver, coupled with a LER scope and a bent bolt might just be the ticket for a proper dedicated sporter.

And no, I'm not interested in hearing from the purists on this one. I'm gonna be sporterizing a refurbed Izzy 91/30 built in 1943 with rough finish, beat up stock, and a perfect bore. Nobody is losing a collector's piece...

I'm putting a jmeck mount on my M38. All I need now is to find my bolt head, get some scope rings and a decent scope.

Thing is, I'm not looking for another "bolt on" or "replace rear sight" mounting setup. I'm looking for a proper drill and tap scope mount. Very few options there, and most are side mount. This is the first time I've found something that could be a top receiver mount scope for a mosin.

I take it you will be mounting on a hex reciever? Did you have a particular dovetail in mind?

what about a PEM scope mount? if you want to drill and tap this is a good option, and its not side mounted, and can still use irons if need be. its seems like it would be a very solid mount.

its alittle past half way down the page.

it seems like the scope mount that you linked to is a rear sight replacement, using the dovetail under the rear sight but then you say that you want a proper drill and tap scope mount. also, unless you have a very slim profile scope( straight tube) i dont see how you could fit a proper scope into that mount?? have you checked out jmeck's or the PEM mount?

It might work, I've never seen a 1 inch straight tube eer scope before ,have you found someone who makes one? I'd do some very careful measuring because that mount is very low and if the rear lens housing
of the scope hangs down in the mag opening the bolt shoulder that
the bolt handle is attached to may hit it when you cycle a round.
Good luck with the project, post some pics when your done.

the price is right, but good luck finding the scope to fit it, besides the one it's made for.
i'd go with the pe mount, myself. works great and is semi-original.

Kalinka optics makes a 1" LER scope. They mention it there in the link.

I think I'm gonna go with a PE mount though with 1" rings.

No, bubba would do it with a torch and a 12 pack of beer.

So the basic plan for the sporter...
Have the barrel cut down to 22" and crowned. Polish all the tool marks on barrel and receiver.

Bent bolt and PE mount w/ 1" rings.
Fiber optic iron sights
Walnut monte carlo stock
reblue and enjoy!

I used to feel more like a purist. I've changed course to think that if it's your rifle you should do whatever you want to it so you can enjoy it.

Not everything is a collector's piece that should only be restored. My problem with MNs is that I don't know a collector's piece from a wall hanger.

Have fun with your Izzy.

Send me all your mosins. If you have a collector's piece I'll keep it safe for you. If you have a wall hanger, I'll send it back to you to play with.

the scope thay have for the mount only has a 65mm eye relief. it has 1/2 moa adjustments as well. no thanks!
you should be happy with the 1" pe mount. you can use any standard scope you like and use the irons as well if you want to.

Yeah, I'm gonna do the PE mount. I think I'll remove all the military sights though, and go with some sort of Williams Firesights system. Although I kinda like the idea of a mojo peep and an M14 front sight with a lit insert...

lol, I finally gave up on that. I will still tell people that you can always do reversible mods. I say, when in doubt, post it first and get a consensus on it. But it is the rifle of the owner, and of course they can do whatever they want. If they want to use it as a bean pole, then there you go lol... The bayonets will stick in the ground, and won't rust out for probably 20 years anyways...
