Stevens/Savage Model 85A

I have a Stevens/Savage Model 85A 22 Caliber that i bought for 5 dollars at the U.S.50 yard sale,It had no clip and thats why i got it so cheap.I have since found clips thanks to my good friends at hoosiergunworks.com,anyway i am now in search of a scope and scope mount for this rifle if i can even get one or not.,Also if anyone can tell me the age and value of this, that would be great,I know i atleast got one of the best deals ever! The gun is super accurate at 5o yards and not bad at 100,but i would still like to find an era model scope for it if possible.Any replys or answers would be great. Thanks for taking the time time to read this, you can e-mail me at rroth@etczone.com if you have any info or would like to purchase this thing.

If it has no scope grooves atop the receiver, it was made from the early fifties or earlier. The scope grooves were introduced about mid-fifties.
Savage/Stevens are hard to date, not having the convenient date codes that Marlins and Remingtons used.
There are side-mounts, that would require the receiver to be drilled&tapped on the left side. My Springfield 87A is so modified, by a prior owner.

Scroll down this page (yes I know it's Mossberg stuff) until you find their scope mount. Mossberg .22 Rifle Parts I have heard of other folks using mossberg scope mounts on their Savage .22's, and this might be just the ticket for you. Otherwise if you go to the rimfirecentral.com savage forum, there is information in one of their stickies about which period scope mounts were used.

I've got a similar vintage 87a (tube fed) which I paid $100 for and absolutely love it. Neat rifle, keeping an eye out for an 85a now too
