Both are great guns functionality-wise (that's a word isn't it?)
Glocks feel terrible in my hand so I'm a Springfield guy. Go pick both up and see what makes yer heart go fast.
Glock has a few customer-service horror stories here on the board. SA is an American company so, presumably, if you had to ship one back it would be cheaper and easier.
If there's a range that rents both, go shoot 'em and see what you like.
Boy talk about choices. i don't like the feel of the glock either. SA would have my vote if you didn't want a 1911. or geta SA and a 1911 problem solved
im not a glock hater and have had to use them but its just not right shape for my hand.
that being said i do feel the XDM workmanship is superior and for the price one of the most superior guns on the market

Maybe I'm defective. I gotta be the only shooter on here that likes both.
(Glock and SA that is)
If you want a gun company that will belittle you and treat you like dirt buy a Glock. If you want a gun that might come brand new in the box broken (Which happens and I understand even the best can make a lemon) and have them not fix it buy a Glock. If you have a need to call a customer service department that is more arrogant than Hillary Clinton buy a Glock. If you want a gun company who will keep your gun for 24 weeks without fixing it buy a Glock.
If you want a well made, high quality, accurate gun at a fair price buy a Springfield. I'm very happy with mine.
I haven't looked at a 23, but I have shot both a G17 and 22 and I like them both a LOT. My preference is the 17 as I think the 9mm is 100% capable and holds more than a .40. I've held a SA XD and didn't really like the grip safety. Just feels really weird to me. I did like the grip angle, but it isn't enough to swing my vore for the Glock. They're lighter and have a very proven track record that neither the XD nor the XDM have. Don't both with a 1911 either. Too big and heavy and don't hold enough rds. Also, you aren't going to be able to find a whole lot of them for any less than a Glock or Springfield. If you want .45, buy a Glock or Springfield in .45 and have a pistol that's just as reliable as a 1911(if not more so), lighter, and holds more rds.
I have the Glock in 40 and the XD in 45. I like them both, but haven't shot either one enough to give a definitive statement on reliability. The Glock feels better in my hand, but the XD wins the beauty contest in my eyes.
You will hear some people bash the Glock and I can't argue with them over their experiences, but you have to ask yourself this : If the Glock were unreliable - and there are certainly enough in use for a good sample - why are there so many still being carried by so many law enforcement personnel. That fact makes a very strong statement I think.

I'm not a glock basher, but I would point out that most cities buy everything on a lowest bidder basis & glock has a reputation of going in with unbelieveably low bids (less than $100 ea.)
I love my Glock and all the ones ive shot, but i like the grip safety on the Springfield adds something to the gun but doesn't slow you down, but i dont like how tall there slides are

Only one way to decide this. Shoot both, or at least handle both. Buy the one which feels best. Obviously, if someone has had a bad experience with any manufacturer they will shun going back. I would too. All kinds of auto pistols that will get the job done. You pay your money and take your choice.
