handmade leather holster

This was my 1st go on a holster. I started out with some blank newspaper and made a pattern.(I wont use the news paper again rips easy) next I traced the pattern on some 9 ounce leather. I started to cut it out and noticed that the pattern was upside down. I am right handed and now had a left handed holster cut out. Opps. O well. With the knowlege of my mother, she guided me step by step making this thing from cutting it out, punching holes, staining the leather and hand lacing it up. Well these are the pics. Im now working on a lefthanded holster i cut out first and hand stamping it.

Hello

Very good! I like to see people making their own kit, as opposed to just buying it already made, sort of gives it "soul". I like to see people using leather holsters instead of these newer plastic holsters I have seen lately.

I think sometime in the future I'll have a go at making a holster for my S&W Model 10-5. I have an older holster that I might use as a pattern. Just one of those things I need to get around to doing instead of talking about it LOL.
Thanks
Mark

The holster looks great, especially for the first one you've done! Are you going to add any kind of retention strap?

I am going to add a strap that just loops over the hammer. I don't want to use snaps or metal rivets. I have a book from the 50's on how to make holsters. I think it is by Al Sulmyer(SP) The left handed one is going to have a twin right handed one. both are going to be tooled and colored and a have a maching ammo belt. I just need a twin gun to go with it. It was a very fun project and not to hard to do. My mom has been doing leather work for 20+ years and has all the tools and know how.

After I took the pics. I dunked the holster in water. Oiled up the the gun and placed it in it and pressed the leather to the gun for about 15 min. Removed and cleaned the gun, and let the holster dry out for a couple of days. It is now molded to fit gun.

Yes, really great work, but it seems quite difficult. My friend has excellent leather Falco holsters from Europe. He loves them.

Thanks, I think I had about 2-3 hours into it once I got on track. My 3 year olds toys do make a funny backdrop in a gun pic
