You'll remember the attempted airport car-bombing by the two muslim doctors in Scotland a couple of years ago? This bomb, based on the police description, seems of a very similar design, and luckily, a very similarly poor technical job that malfunctioned.
I will refrain from speculation as to who is behind it at this point, but the similarities between the two cases, including the failure to explode, would tend to cause me to look toward the same source.

I'd say home-grown muslim fundamentalists with perhaps a passing connection to radical clerics overseas, but who have not attended any formal terrorist training. These are the major hasan type. Any self-respecting terrorist who attended a school would not make such a shoddy device. Making something go BOOM is not that complicated, so I'm leaning toward incompetent Islamic terrorist.
I do not believe this would be a probing attack. Even terrorists know that the investigative and forensic capabilities of the United States are such that we will find those responsible if any evidence is left behind. Terrorists are not in the business of getting caught. They fully expected this device to blow and make the job more difficult. I will chalk this one up to poor design and radical incompetence and wait to see if my suspicions prove correct.

Ok, ****it... thinking about Napolitano has me all worked up, so I'm gonna lay it all out for you from my perspective. She, and this administration, are leaving our borders open on purpose. They WANT illegal immigrants to flood into America, partly to appease the amnesty crowd, and partly to foment racial tension among our people. They played the race card successfully during the election and now they need a reason to play it again to retain power and gain more of it.
In a nutshell, they want chaos. Socialists need chaos in order to justify their oppressive actions and programs of expanded governmental control of the citizenry. Remember, let now good crisis go to waste. A couple of attempted terror bombings, whomever they are blamed upon, just plays into their hands in this agenda.

I like how cnn is saying the Police averted a terrorist bomb attempt,, bull hockey, it was a civilian who notified a police about the smoke. ! From the latest reports I have heard this was NO probe by the Pakistani Taliban, but a terrorist attack apparently by a very rank amatuer. The supposed "Bomb" was childishly constucted and poorly assembled the actual "Explosives or combustibles" are as follows:
Commercial consumer grade fireworks
2- 20 lb propane tanks
2- 5 gallon gas cans
2- 40 lb bags of fertilizer (Non-explosive) not ammonium nitrate
several timers with extra batteries
Apparently the only thing that actually detonated from what they can tell appears to have been a string of firecrakers.
Hardly the work of a trained terrorist.

I have to agree with you ezearln, this was some botched attempt by an idiot, if it had been the Taliban it would of worked, taking out the bomber too.
