| Viper
I bought a viper for my son from Wal-mart when he was 10 he's 25 now and the gun has never given us a problem. I don't know if they made a viper in another # beside 522. I don't have it here to look but I know it is a viper. But his doesn't have a plastic clip it's metal.

I was just given a Viper by my friend to clean, it was really dirty. He said he has been firing it for 5 years and never cleaned it.lol. I guess it just started jamming so I took it apart and cleaned and oiled it really good. Problem is after the re-assembly, everything put back together, nothing was broken..but the gun wont fire. I was readig this post and saw it looks to be a common problem/complaint but I dont see and answer. Any ideas?...Thanks in advance

I bought both the Viper and the 597 and I was disapointed in both of them. I couldn't sell them fast enough. The 597 was the last autoloader I will ever buy from Remington.

BattleRifle, looks are the only thing neat about the viper. Besides the marlin m60 it's quite possibly the most unreliable 22 auto on the market. They'll shoot great groups but it'll take you awhile cause you'll spend more time diggin out jams than shooting.

Hello, Long time Remington fan here and first time poster.
I have become interested in the model 522 Viper. I am currently evaluating four rifles recently purchased in the hope of discovering why some people seem to have problems with them.
Three are used rifles two of which were neglected and badly stored for years. Lot's of exterior rust but thanks to the composite "receiver" very little interior rust. After a complete disassembly and clean-up they function perfectly.
The fourth is a NIB (new in box) example that I shot without any disassembly or cleaning. It FTC (fail to cock) on average three rounds out of five. I took it home and completely disassembled it and found the chamber to have old dried oil in it and the interior of the "receiver" very dry.
I cleaned the chamber with a wire brush and lubed the receiver with RemOil, took it back to the range and it shot fine with no problems.
Moral of the story, clean and lubricate your model 552. And BTW the trigger will not drop without the magazine in place. Mine have metal magazines and present no problems and they are far superior to other box magazines I have had experience with.
I have about 100 firearms, mostly Remingtons and have been collecting and repairing them for years.
Some of my Remingtons, 550-1's, 550-P's and 550-2G's mostly..

It is possible to reassemble these with a kinked action spring. Take it apart again and check. Also ensure the red spring is installed on the right side of the receiver. Also make sure you replace the magazine before testing the rifle. The Viper has a trigger block when the magazine is not in place. Use a snap cap in the chamber when pulling the trigger.

| It's a great gun
I got my Viper when I graduated 8th grade 13 years ago. It's always fired fine, and never had any stoppages. I used a bargain scope for a short time, and currently just use the front post ( I lost the rear sight when using the scope ). It's still good for plinking with just the front post. Now, my father loved guns and instilled in me the necessity to clean my weapons. Any weapon will jam if improperly maintained. Ask Jessica Lynch. On a side note, I also have a Marlin 60SS. I've also never had a problem with that rifle either. Maybe the SS model is slightly better, but the action is still the same. Also, I have both plastic and metal mags for my Viper. My only problem with the plastic is that it has melted a little when I having too much fun pulling off rounds. The metal ones I have are also a little off color.

| Viper 522 jamming solution
I've owned a Viper since the year they came out. It's not perfect, but I've enjoyed it along with my sons.
Primary problem with jamming is the design of the feed ramp. For those of you experiencing jamming problems, they likely occur when you are chambering lead / non-jacketed rounds or hollow points. When you extract a jammed round, notice the cuts on either side of it. Caused by jamming into the v-notch of the ramp.
My suggestion is to dress/polish the feed ramp. This should be done by a reputable gunsmith. Also avoid "soft" or HP rounds until you've cycled a lot of rounds through it. How many rounds is that??? I don't know, I polished my feed ramp and only fire jackteted rounds....
Happy Plinking

The Remington 522 Viper was a short-lived embarrassment and discontinued because of an array of problems, guess you get what you pay for. The 597 is a much nicer semi-auto for around $135-$175 with a decent trigger to boot!! Not knocking the 522, just my experiences with it were bad.

I have a viper and its been a very accurate rifle but real unreliable in the cold temperatures, and its to cold most of the time here. I will sell parts off the rifle if anyone is in need, I also have two of the metal magazines.

Found a 522 in a local pawn shop for $85, no magazine.
After reading what has been posted so far, I'm thinking it would be a bad idea.
