Rem 1100 not cycling

Indeed, my new used Rem 1100 won't cycle completely. In fact, when I work the action after firing, the old shell is still in the chamber. I know some shotguns have a setting for manual cycling, is this something I need to figure out? Didn't think anything was wrong with the O-ring but Gander Mountain had those for sale.

I used light federal loads, then Fiocchi high brass buckshot. Same problems. Do I need to up it to 3" shells (it did say magnum on the barrel).

Or is there something I should tinker with or adjust?

I've heard of some remmy auto loaders not cycling but that was due to low brass shells. Have you completely disassemble the gun? any obstructions behind the bolt?

Come to think of it it is due for a good cleaning and oiling. Course Gander Mountain's 90 day gunsmithing warranty is still good.

replace the "o" ring, cheap and make sure the metal ring is in the correect direction first. i have had plenty of them come into the shop not cycleing. only to find the ring is fine but some where during cleaning and reassembely the metal ring got turned upside down. simple but sometimes the problem.

Magnum 1100's will not cycle with trap loads, the recoil spring is too strong and made for magnum or high brass loads to function properly.

I know you said it but a good cleaning for that 1100 would do wonders.
IMO.

In addition to all of the above, check the gas port in the barrel to make sure its not fouled up.

1100's are touchy. I have to clean mine fairly often. Make sure the O-rings and the gas rings are all on right, then clean it out good.

Unscrew the end cap, and wipe all of that gunk off. There is an o ring there, so be careful. Then, if you want even better performance, take out the trigger mech. Mine did the same thing. You have to manually cycle it when you think you got a second round chambered.

when is this dude gonna clean this thing..?

my 1100 tact2 is new ,maybe 150 thru it. its flawless at this point. no trouble at all,im not going to use the word "yet". know a guy at the range who hasnt cleaned a new 1100 tact2 for about 7 months(every other weekend at the range)about 900 rds thru his,he wont break it down until a problem, ill post when he cleans it...i clean mine after every outing. heavy loads... i got to agree with snowmans recent post... later ps-actually everyone makes sense about this thread. the 1100 is a hobby, you have to keep at it,maintenance that is.

going for the m3 s90 very soon.love my remys, but gotta have one, could always sell it...

With the exception of some foreign military guns! All semiautomatics must be kept clean, and "vary lightly oiled",in order to properly cycle. Many people buy semi/autos,without the basic knowledge of dissemble and assembly for proper maintenance, and we get jamming guns with a bad reputation.

A couple things affect adversely the 1100 cycling. First, crud build up on the magazine tube impedes the piston (rings) movement. Remove the Oring, then the piston rings (check your booklet to make sure that you know the right position and order the rings reinstall), then thoroughly clean the magazine tube. DO NOT OIL THE TUBE!! The hot gas from the barrel ports burns the oil and quickly makes crud build-up, slowing down or stopping the piston rings from sliding on the magazine tube. Reinstall the rings in the proper order/position, then the Oring. Clean the magazine tube after every 200 rounds.

The other reason could be that mentioned before. A previous cleaning resulted in the piston rings not being installed correctly.
