Been hashing over what sort of shotgun to get for winged birds and slug gunting, and home defense unless I end up keeping my 590 (tough call.) You know how you often are stuck between a few choices, each with all their advantages, and it takes a bargain looking you in the face to make up your mind?

Saw a used Synthetic 870 Express Super Magnum at Gander Mountain in the low 200s. Already had a 760 on layaway so I decided I needed to wait. Next time it was still there, and I asked the guy if one could layaway two at a time. He checked with the manager and I sure could. So I put a chunk down on it and it's waiting for me as soon as I pay off the rest. Was planning to let my M590 go as soon as I had a definite buy on a replacement, now I'm thinking that would be one less barrel I'd have to buy for the 870. Thought of getting a combo with a slug barrel and a long choked barrel for minimum $$$, but most combos had a cantilever rail and I wanted open sites (I mean it's a shotgun for pete's sake.) An NEF parder pump would have run $300ish for such a combo. This way I'll end up assembling a combo with the barrels of my choice for a little over $300, AND it'll be an 870, AND it'll be able to take 3.5" shells if I'm ever crazy enough to buy and use them. Otherwise, 3" will work just fine, and any 12ga 870 barrel will fit.

Was planning also to buy an 18" barrel and mag extension for home defense, but with those costs adding up I'm wondering if I'd be just as well to keep my 590 and heep the 870 strictly for hunting.

I'd buy the 870 to compliment your 590, you don't have to switch bbl's once you get home

In the 870's favor, I just found the much sought after factory mag extension at the gun show, and it appears to be even longer than the current production ones - Perfect for using the longer rifle sited barrel I had in mind.

The factory extensions have the end turned down to the perfect size for an M16 bayonet... Special Purpose 590, you have met your match

And here it is with the original barrel. A rifled barrel and rifle sited 20" barrel will probably be in its near future.

I have remingtons 870 express super mag combo and absolutely love it! Just got finished shooting of 2 boxed of 3 1/2's! those clay birds didn't know what hit em, well most of em! If you decide to get the combo or even the 870 there is no chance of being dissapointed im my mind!!
