Remington 700 Variants

Hey all, just got back from a large gunshow, apparantly the largest all year in OR. I came across a rifle that really caught my eye, and if it hadn't been 900.00 I would have taken her home for sure. It was a short barrelled "police model" Rem 700 chambered for .308. It didn't have the specific make, and stupidly i didn't ask for it. I'm a small guy (about 5'6, 130lbs) with pretty short arms, so the short barrel really appealed to me. (With my RRA AR15, I'm comfortable shooting with the telestock 2-3 positions from fully closed.)

I wouldnt mind getting one of those used. I was told I could find one used for as low as 400. Dunno if it's true though. I was looking around on Impactguns.com trying to just find it, and i found two that look like it. The weird thing is the huge price difference. Anyone know why? Even if you dont, what can you tell me about...well anything I mentioned I guess? They had the same rifle in .243 and .223 as well as .300winmag but I have been told and believe myself that the .308 is a great performer, plus its pretty cheap.

Here are the two rifles:

Remington 700 308 Special Purpose Synthetic Tactical, Hogue Stock

Remington 700 LTR 308 (Light Tactical Rifle)

Is the cheaper model really that much worse? I woudn't need to shoot past 400yds.

Thanks

The expensive one has a fluted barrel and a better stock. Plus, if you paint anything black and call it "tactical", it's automatically worth 30% more!

They're both black haha.

So you think the first one will serve me well?

im sure either would do fine with a good scope and bullet match!
i would probably go with the cheaper one if your on a budget so you have some money left for a scope, rings and whatever else you may want. or if you have money to spend then go ahead with the more pricey one!

for 400yards and under, does anyone have any scope reccomendations? Would a 3-9X40 be ok? They have nice ones at some sporting goods stores around here for about 75.00, seems low from what i read on here

Get on E-bay and buy an old Weaver or Lyman 4 or 6X. More bang for your buck. 6X is plenty. You don't need a variable for that kinda distance.

...whats wrong with a scope that can do 3-9? 6x is included in that. I've never understood the advantage of a fixed-power scope...

I dont think i could see a bulls eye on a target all that well from 300 yards with 6X...

Fewer moving parts to break. In his price range, they WILL break. Plus, higher magnification gets novice shooters to thinking they can shoot farther than they can.

What ever scope or power you buy I would recommend a 50mm for one of these rifles.
You will be able to see better all around...A.H

The price range you mentioned for a scope can be difficult for finding a decent quality scope. I'd first recommend a moderate power and medium sized objective lens as the higher power and big objective scopes are MORE costly to produce. I'd look for a sale on a medium sized scope; a 2-7x32 or 3-9x40 as two examples. Here's a few models that are slightly higher priced than you mentioned but known for consistent quality/dollar. The last link is an exceptional value. Midway's site also has a link on each of those pages to see customer ratings of each scope. Good luck!

MidwayUSA - Sightron S1 Scope 3-9x 40mm Plex Reticle Matte

MidwayUSA - Sightron S1 Scope 3-9x 40mm Mil-Dot Reticle Matte

Nikon 3-9x40 ProStaff Riflescope

This is an excellent Value; it's a Bushnell Elite 3200 rebadged to Browning and a $200+ scope!
Natchez Shooters Supplies - Bushnell Products - Bushnell Browning Scope 3-9X40

[b][i]Well, Let's add these too then...

Weaver 3-9x38 Classic V9 Series Rifle Scope

no, you guys misunderstood me. I am willing to spend around 150 for a scope, I just said i saw ones at some sporting goods stores for 75.00 and that seemed low. I don't think you can get much of a 400yd scope for under 100

About the only way you could find a used LTR for $400 might be for one that is stolen or from someone that was truly desperate for cash. The only used 700s I see for anywhere near $400 these days are the SPS plastic stocked sporters.

With that said the SPS Tactical would serve you well. It is like the LTR without flutes and a Hogue stock instead of the HS Precision used on the LTR. You could get the SPS Tactical for now and always find a HS Precision or B&C Medalist stock later and sell the Hogue stock.

I won a HS Precision stock on eBay early last year and then later bought a SPS Varmint and dropped it right in.

I also have a .223 LTR and it is has been my most accurate rifle ever. Back when I bought mine they were "only" $789. But I had a trade and did not have to pay much difference.

Ah, Thanks. Considering the "Special Pupose Hogue Stock" one is under 600, I woudn't mind saving myself the trouble of looking in pawn shops and just buying it new. With a decent fixed power scope and a little skill from the shooter, I should be able to make shots at 350yds, yes?
