Try a Browning lever .22 at plinking and youll be hooked ! The short lever action is half the travel of others . I do like the marlin also though.

That short throw is what I don't like about the Browning. A buddy of mine had one that I put a lot of rounds through but I never did learn to like it.

I have two, an old Winchester 9422 Legacy and a 2nd hand Marlin Golden 39A. Both are very accurate. The 39A with its bull barrel seems heavier. Not crazy about the factory iron sights on either. The 39A has a 3-9x33AO Weaver rimfire scope. The Winchester has a receiver peep sight added. Oddly, the Win. prefers CCI standard velocity while the Marlin prefers HV Mini-Mags.

I'd be interested in seeing the 39A with a bull barrel, if you have a pic. I have several 39A's but never knew they produced a bull barrel.

Marlin is famous

The Marlin lever action has been famous for many decades.
It is a lot of quality. Yes, I do understand some of them may
have needed gunsmithing but I have never encountered anyone
with a Marlin that needed repair.

I don't think I agree with this. I have a 39a, and while I do think it is very nice, best is a bit of a stretch IMO. There are several things to look at in a lever gun. The 39a's lever is very tight and cheaper bullets like superX and golden duds tend to shave when going through the action. After handling and shooting a Henry I am thinking I would give the number 1 position to a Henry Golden Boy and a close number 2 to the 39a.

Best anything is filled with personal preference. I would suggest that if "cheaper cartridges" tend to shave, and higher quality cartridges do not, then by virtue of the word "cheaper" if nothing else, I'd fault the cartridges long before I'd fault the 39A.

The Marlin 39A's are, and have always been built like trucks. I like trucks.

Sometimes I think mossberg goes out of their way to make their product look as ugly as possible. I am surprised they didn't think up the rhino revolver.

.22 lever posts always turn into the Marlin 39 thread

When the subject .22 rimfire lever comes up it ends up all about the Marlin 39.
I dont know, to me growing up with my fathers Marlin 56 Levermatic, My own Winchester 9422 and my uncles Win 250 and later my own Winchester 250 and a Ruger 96/22M, conventional leveractions just dont trip my trigger, I can get excited about unconventional levers like Rugers Model 96/22 and the Marlin 57 tube fed, and other models of hammerless levers,
To me the Marlin 39 is like growing up in a family with 4 of leggy blond sisters, you think Brunetts or Redheads are exotic and little short Asian's are the Bomb.
Mossberg is shure to take a beating from the traditionalists, But they are making a platform that can be used, and in 20 years they will have tons more collector value than any common Marlin 39.

Tell ya what... open a minimum-balance savings account, with the minimum amount..... leave it for 20 years... if at the end of 20 years this Mossberg rifle is valued at more than the Marlin 39A, then treat yourself to a few guns. But if the 39A is valued at more than the Mossy, then you donate the money to the NRA, or your favorite conservative charity.

I'll never live that long, but some here will.

Mine doesn't seem to have that problem. There's a few lead shavings in the action when I clean it, but nothing to write home about.
