still a week until I can pick up my new 10/22 and I'm already thinking about mods. I found rings on my bench and have an extra 4x Weaver K scope so that should work. I have a sling so for a few bucks I can get the swivels and be set there too.
I'd like to replace the barrel and stock, but that may have to wait a while for funds. In the mean time I thought maybe stripping the hardwood and giving it a Krylon camo treatment as a stop gap until I can get the Hogue and .920 barrel that I want.
Pictures of you home camo jobs appreciated because I'll do a lot better copying someone else's pattern than if I invent one myself.
I see lots of good ideas in other threads here too and I thank the posters for those ideas.
dang, 3 days to go and I've already spent hours watching youTube videos on mods to the 10/22. I already have rings and scope ready along with a sling. Extended mag release and swivels will arrive the day after I get the gun. What I don't have that apparently I need is the replacement bolt/recoil buffer, so I'll see if one is avail at the LGS, otherwise I'll get if from Midway. Heck, if I have to order that from Midway I'll also order a muzzle break and either a bore snake or a bore guide.
Mods that I'll do ASAP are to polish the bottom of the bolt and the bolt raceway and to modify the bolt release to 'auto'. Finally I'll do something to the hardwood stock, either camo or just flat black. Total expenditure should be under $50.
Seems like a trigger job will be necessary fairly soon, but not right away. Then finally I'll get that Hogue stock and Green Mountain barrel.
I'm getting antsy waiting but this promises to be great fun.
Sounds like fun. Mine is still stock with an old school Weaver K4 scope. I did put a power custom hammer in it that improved the trigger a bit. I got mine in '88
picked her up this morning. Mounted the Weaver K scope immediately. Wood is OK, not great, not horrible but I have in mind a black stock, either the Hogue (on sale at Midway) or just break out the Krylon.
I went to easy1022modifications.com to get his book on how to mod the gun and have a few parts arriving tomorrow or the next day.
One of the first things I'll do is modify the bolt lock thingie. It is indeed a pain to release a locked bolt now and that looks to be an easy fix.
I need a brass drift and Lowes, Home Depot, and Harbor Freight all did not carry any and the local ACE store closed its doors. I'll have to go online and get one, or a set.
Next step is to get it out of the stock and see what needs polishing around the trigger and bolt.
youtube is a great resource. saves you the cost of books. most of the mods are real simple. trigger group is the most confusing but nothing you cant handle im sure.

OK, here goes! The stock mag release is fine, not sure what that was all about. Parts arrived, recoil buffer installed, I made the mod for the auto bolt release (took a few tries to get it right and get it all back together right, but it works like a champ). Added the muzzle break (for looks). Swivels to be installed tomorrow. Bore snake ready, obviating the need to drill an access hole in the back of the receiver for cleaning. Oh, yeah, since punches were not avail locally I made my own by chopping up a small screwdriver and polishing it. I have a whole drawer of small wrenches, screwdrivers and such. Doesn't everyone?
Still not sure about the stock, paint it, leave it, replace it with Hogue overmolded, like the one on my 7x57 field gun, or ???
A couple boxes of ammo on hand, but it will have to be next Tue or the following Sat before I shoot it. By then maybe I'll have the bolt and trigger polishing done too.
This is my 10/22...a Wally World special...before & after.
I sanded down the stock to bare wood, sealed it then applied a satin black enamel. I added a scope rail, under stock rail, bipod, butt pad, and a muzzle brake for looks.
If you don't count the scope, I have about $50 into her. Scope was $49.
very nice. think you've convinced me to go with the black paint job, at least for now. I have the same muzzle brake. I'll have to think about that rail on the bottom. very interesting concept. I've got a sling on mine so I have to see how that works with the bipod.
I to have a 10/22. Check out CheapGunParts.com They have a trigger fix that is a good and and not that expensive. It's called the Volquartsen. The trigger pull on your new 10/22 is gonna be REAL stiff. With the hammer kit you will notice a big diffrence. If you do replace the hammer go ahead and change out the mag release at the same time, I look at it this way, no need to take it all aport twice. Be carefull when you change the mag release. You have to get use to that because you will unknowingly catch the mag release and the mag will release and fall out if you don't catch it. Took a couple time of me saying "WHAT THE HELL".
The 10/22 is easy and fun to work on. Youtube does have a lot of tubes on the 10/22. When I replace the hammer on mine I had the written directions and the youtube playin on the computer. Between the 2 I got it right the first time.
I also purchased the target barrel from Green Mountain. They did not have the cheaper barrel in stock so they made me a deal on the next step up which is the fluted which is also drilled and tapped. They gave it to me at thier cost since they didn't have the one that I wanted. But be carefull when dealing with them. They send you an invoice telling you what you purchased, but it is NOT itemized (they don't show what you paid for the barrel or shipping). Right now I am looking for a used stock that I can carve out for the target barrel. I don't want to buy a new stock, just a used one I can hack up and carve out for the target barrel. That might be a winter project.
My Ruger 10/22 is old,1973,blue.
mods include old wood under folding stock, steel hard ware, sold from magazines 30 years ago,got mine in a gunshow, dealer didn't know what it fit.The brand is Federal ordinance.
16" carbon barrel, much lighter, shorter, accurite and reliable than original.
25 round steel lip mags, more reliable than plastic lip hi-cap mags.
Folded length,25 1/2".
Wt,about 3 1/2 lb.
Wish I could give you guys a pic!
The best I can do for a pic is my avatar.

what scope and where did you pick it up?
The scope is a CenterPoint Adventure Class 3-9x40 AO w/ illuminated retical and rubber armor. These are the one's Wally World was selling off last year. I found mine on Amazon for $49 since WM cleared them all out.
The scope is clear up to 8x, then it's fuzzy. I can live with that considering what I paid. I've never had it lose its zero.
TN...I have several used 10/22 stocks...e-mail me if interested.
OJH, Thanks, you know I will email ya. I gotta check up on ya now and then to see how you're doing and what you been up to. And to see if ya been down to the thinkin pond lately LOL.

I have two Center-Point scopes mounted and am quite pleased with their performance...for the price they are hard to beat. JMHO
i did my 10/22 trigger last week.it now has a measured 2.5 lb. pull for a total cost of -NOTHING.there are vids all over showing how to do this.i polished stock trigger components and stoned down hammer and sear . i stretched and clipped trigger return spring. it has a sharp positive reset...maybe i got lucky im not sure. it was the first time i have done this on a gun. the original trigger pull was awful to say the least. point is- give it a try as the stock trigger parts are dirt cheap and if you mess it up you can always swap in more expensive pieces to upgrade if need be. just cause you have a 10/22 , doesnt mean you have to take all the ruger out of the gun to have fun with it-especially a plinking gun. i purchased the trigger springs online before i did trigger .i was soo happy with how it turned out, im going to sell them and use the money for another box of ammo as they were never taken out of the bags.

if you have stones you can work the trigger yourself, i didnt and figured $50 for a new sear and hammer was worth it. got the same 2lb pull by just swapping. all depends on what your time is worth and how highly you think of your diy skills.
the hogue stock is nice, you lose the barrel band though. id get the .920 barrel channel one since you will end up replacing that at some point anyways and you wont have to open up the smaller channel.
