I have 2 Winchester Model 74's one chambered for shorts the other for long rifles. Neither of the rifles are drilled to accept any rail. The Marlin you have should already be milled to accept standard 22 rings.

Most .22 caliber Marlins have a dovetail mount machined into the top of the receiver that will accept most .22 caliber scope rings. The rings are usually pre-attached to the scope so it is an easy mounting. Most scope makers produce .22 caliber scopes in this format.

Stay away from the Gamo scope, however, it is cheap, cheap, cheap junk.

Tasco, Burris, and Center-Point can be had at WalMart for very reasonable prices.

The Winchester 74 I have no knowledge of. If it is not pre-D&T'd then you could have it D&T'd for nearly any base; depending on matching the curvature of the receiver, of course.

Go to the weaver web-site and click on the 'Mount Charts' on the menu bar; enter in the make of your rifle in question and a chart will load. Look up your model and you will find the required base numbers for your application. There is no indication the 74 needs to be D&T'd but...? The 74 also shows a top mount and a side-mount. Check it out.

Gonna tell you what someone told me, Using a Gen +1 night scope is no better then hunting with a regular scope during a full moon. If your not gonna go with a Gen+2 or +3 then use a Laser Designater . I use it at night for Hog hunting on my .308 and on my 17HMR Small hogs and coons. I could not be more Happy, Lights them up really good and they dont see green.

I've got a Center Point 4-16x44 on my Marlin 25MN

At first I used Weaver See-thru 3/8" rimfire mount rings,
then went to a DIP Pic Rail with Quad-lock medium rings.

DIP Pic rail

I KNOW I took new pics of the current setup, now where the heck are they??? LOL

Previous setup w/ Weaver see-thru rings (needed clearance for the scope covers, therefore tall rings)

End result...almost got a Smiley-face...LOL
