Walked into Academy Sports today with my 1 year old daughter. I knew I wanted to buy a 22 rifle, but had no idea if I wanted a Ruger, Marlin, Henry or a Cricket. The gun will one day be hers, but I figured I'd make sure it was "broken" in before it went to her.
Looked at several and was wary of a 10/22 since the one that I had was about the most inaccurate rifle ever. An aftermarket bull barrel and Houge stock fixed that and I'm happy with it now. But I wanted one for open sights and didn't want to replace any parts to accurize it.
I knew from this board that the Marlin 60's have a great reputation for being out of the box accurate. My 336 (from the 70's) and XL7 (from 2008) are surely very accurate. When I saw that the Marlin was $50 cheaper than the 10/22 ($150) I figured I'd get it. When the sales staff got the one from the back and un-boxed it, I knew I had made the right choice. The display gun didn't do the nice wood on these things any justice.
First thing I did when I got home was paint the front sight bright green. I won't get a chance to shoot it until Sunday evening (or maybe even Monday). In the mean time, since I'm new to the Marlin rim fires, is there anything I should be made aware of? Sticky triggers, poor extraction (like the Ruger pre-aftermarket extractor)?
Good for you and I think you made a great choice. They seem to be popular as hell and I can vouch for Marlins accuracy. Had a Model 99 carbine way back and I loved it. Gold plated trigger back then. Just bought a Marlin 925M in 22 mag. and is a tack driver. In fact you may want to consider one for yourself someday. Accurate with the micro-groove rifling Marlins uses on 22s. Sure you will enjoy shooting with you daughter. Best Wishes.
I like the stock. It looks cool with the grain of the wood so vibrant and bold. Never seen a model 60 with a stock like that. they are usually stained and lacquered over.
Those are great guns and I think you will like it. And at a good price on top of that.
Some people that have shot mine think that loading the tube mag is annoying. I think it's great because there are no detachable mags to buy, lose or accidentally leave at home. And they hold more than 10 rounds, which is a nice perk here in CA.

Great choice. Keep it clean and lubed, it rocks.
Nice heavy barrel with the tube to help the strength.
I took a squirrel at 70 yds right behind the ear with a stinger.
The model 60 was a good choice. Feed it good grub(shells) and keep it clean. It won`t let you down.
Yup. I paint the blade of the front sight bright neon green on most of my open sight guns (except my 336 which has a perty gold bead). It makes it much easier to see in low light. I don't paint the whole sight, just the back side that faces the shooter.
Been doing it for years. I remember my dad helping me use some of mama's finger nail polish to paint the front blade on my red ryder BB gun and white nail polish on my Benjamin pump pellet gun. Come to think of it, the pellet gun still has that white polish on it 15 years later.
Now I just need to find my favorite shells in stock. Federal's bulk packaged "Auto Match" is more accurate in my bull barreled 10/22 than CCI Mini mags, and much cheaper. In my dad's Ruger Mark II it was just as accurate. Same price as the 500 rnd brick, but only comes with 350 rounds. Well worth losing the 150 rounds from the true "brick." found 'em once, bought a box to try (along with CCI Mini Mags, Win Hyper velocity in 36 and 40 grain) and found them to be great. Now I can't find them! Out of stock in all five Wal Marts within 30 miles of me and Academy or Gander don't carry them at all.

Nevermind, online shows them to be in stock at the closest Wal Mart! And I was wrong on the round count, 325 rounds only. But at just over $15 a box, still cheaper than the 100 cpunt boxes of Mini Mags at $8 a box. And more accurate. And I don't have any problem taking a head shot on a rabbit or squirrel with a round nose bullet. The hollow points really don't expand anyway in a squirrel from my experience. If you want expansion, get a .17 hmr. Those things destroy a squirrel head!

I cut off aluminum arrows and load them with .22 rounds then cap it off with a empty .38 case. I fill several of these. You pull the cap and dump it in the magazine you can load in seconds.

I tried all kinds of that stuff, and prefer to just load by hand. Just my personal experience.
I haven't seen one with a pretty stock like that before. Almost similar to the Ruger 10-22 Target stock which I had but replaced with an aftermarket composite stock. The two Marlin model 60's that I had before had one thing in common and that is when they get dirty they get fussy. I have a friend that has one though that he shot for a year and didn't clean. I took it apart for him and it poured gunpowder from the stock when I separated it from the action. Every crevice that could be was filled with black soot or excess gunpowder and the thing was still functioning! Go figure! I just got tired of loading the tubular magazine reloading the rifle and wanted a faster reload with magazines so I sold them and started with a Savage model 64F for $139.00 on sale at Bass Pro Shop and ended up with a Ruger 10-22T with a bull barrel that I have customized for match shooting. Have fun with your Marlin 60 I'm sure it will give you years of good service.
Read my stuff in the Marlin forum here on G&G...tons of info on the 60
Love the stock on yours!! Didn't know they were giving away (practically) the laminates for regular price!!
I took the next step on my Wifey's rifle, got her a Boyd's laminate and stained it pink...
The triggerguard is a Pink DIP with the Silver trigger...goes with the whole stainless action housing thing...
still have to remove the bluing from the barrel & polish it, then clearcoat it to seal...then paint the mag tube silver...
DIP has a three page catalog of fun Marlin stuff!! Marlin Rimfire Parts and Accessories
Avoid Remington rimfire ammo...but if you've been around here for long, ya know that already...
Main headache with the Marlin seems to be a misaligned ejector wire...which we've got a few posts about...with pics...
one nickel width high, one nickel width towards the center of the feed throat...its that simple.
It'll get bent occasionally due to dissassembly goofs or an ammo jam due to a short-powder round...
all ya do, is take your Nickel Gauge and reset it, and yer good to go!!
Make sure you clean all the packing grease out as well...a fast detail strip as shown on Utube & cleaning...
LIGHT oil, as is ONE drop applied with a fingertip all over the action, then ONE drop applied on the bolt & action housing...
let air-dry for an hour or two...then reassemble.
When you clean & oil the barrel, rub DRY patches thru until the chamber/barrel is DRY, as oil + pressure + heat =glue.
Also smart to do the above with ANY rifle...especially semi-auto's...
If you need to do an in-depth dissassembly, as in taking the action completely down (RARE, used for changing action parts)
Arrowdodger of RFC (google him) has the best in-depth pictorial of the process.

Awesome stock! Something like that might possibly get my wife interested in shooting which is not her thing.

I prefer tube magazines as well. And 14+1 is 4 more rounds than a standard 10/22 mag on top of being a more accurate rifle out of the box. I would rather drop a few shells out of my pocket than a $20+ mag in the woods.

Show her the pic
I've actually added a few things to hers which she literally hasn't seen yet...a pink camo sling & a Bipod...
planning on surprising her when we go to the range...its hidden in the back of the #2 safe
I'll take pics during the range visit...should be fun!!

Spee-D-Loader, google it.
Or search on here for my name & Spee-d-loader...
Get proficient with 'em, and you can reload faster than most folks can reload a 1022 mag.

Tried one of those as well. I'm not saying that these faster reloading methods don't work, it's just a personal preference of mine. One less thing to fiddle around with, I guess.

Man, this post really brings back memories. In 1967, I bought my first rifle - the Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 when I was 13 years old, brand new in the box and paid a whopping $70 bucks (money that I had earned). I didn't have to sign anything and Dad was waiting outside - no one raised an eyebrow and I also bought two boxes of shells. Later, I took it to high school and kept it in my truck (a 1956 Chevy- I wish I still had) so we could go rabbit hunting after school. Well, I still have that Marlin, and taught both my kids how to shoot with that rifle. I hope your memories will be just as good as time passes and you look back.

I use small diameter short curtain rods and use foam ear plugs to cap them. They come in several lengths so finding your capacity should present no problem. These are fairly inexpensive and do the job well. I think the rods I bought were 2 for like $1.50.
I also have the Speed Loader with eight integral tubes...it can be a little finicky getting the cap to align with the SL's tubes...but with practice...all will come out in the wash.
OH! Congrats on the rifle...a good choice. You do have some good looking wood on that new toy!

if you think the paint on the front sight helps you should see one with a set of williams fire sights on it.. wow so easy to pick up even in low light.
I ordered one set to try and 15 minutes after I had them installed on the first model 60 I was online and ordered 4 more sets for the rest of my open sighted guns.
