Kid shot his new 10/22 today!

After the son (16 years old) wanted to get into airsoft, I convinced him (and the wife) to get a Ruger 10/22. I also ordered a TAPCO stock, but was at the parent's farm today, so it went also.

He had a bit of an issue hitting a mall piece of metal at 25 yards (kept shooting high), but then we saw some old torch tanks laying down. Seems my brother shot them with his 30-06 so he could sell them for scrap. I told the kid to call his Uncle and ask if they were available targets. YEP!

I was surprised! We was about 35 yards away, and the kid was hitting it 10 out of ten shots, then 24 out of 25 (extended mag). He asked if he could shoot faster, and I said as long as he was keeping it on target I didn't care how fast he shot.

He put in the 25 round mag and unloaded it fast (not super fast but fast) and hit it 19 out of 25 shots. Then he shot 10 rounds super fast and hit it 6 times. I was surprised and kind of proud too!

We ended up shootig about 300 rounds (time limited), and walked the half mile back to the house, talking about the next time we are going shooting with it.

Is the gun scoped??? I know you were just basically plinking today, but it would be good to have him shoot off sandbags to see what he and the gun are capable of off sand bags, even without a scope.

No scope yet. Just plinking for the first time before the new stock arrives.

Smile

Good choice, I got my son a 10/22 for his first gun. He had more fun just changing it around with differant stocks.

Congrats on you and your son out for a day of shooting. And on his first rifle and shooting it for the first time.

LHS I am happy that your son is shooting and likes his 10/22. Reading threads like this makes me wish my son was out of the womb and on the range with me already.

When still in the womb hold boxes of loaded ammo and guns to the mother's belly. It seems to help him or her like guns after they are born. Reading gun articles helps also, as does liting to Clint Eastwood movies.

Just be certain the mother is okay with doing this before trying. Otherwise, you will have to do it while she is asleep, and you run the risk of her waking up and seeing you holding a pistol to her belly and not understanding why you are doing it.

Ya' gotta start young now-a-days!

Don't forget the John Wayne movies as well, just not Hitari, the kid will try to milk billy goats then. But then again in hearing Hitari the kid may want to be a rocket scientist.

I'll go into withdraw if I do not get my polka fix!

Maybe some Boxcar Willie will suffice until I'm allowed polka again....

That is great! one word of caution from a man with kids. Get ready for a max exoudous of cash from the old wallet for ammo. Hey, it's worth it though.

There is nothing better than teaching someone to shoot with a "Supremely Viable" 10/22...

Now it is a Ruger 10/22 Supreme Viable Zombie Killer

Got the TAPCO stock on it. Kid wants a different site (red dot like an AR-15), a forward pistol grip, and maybe a permanent bipod (el-cheapo snap on now).
Of course, also needs about 10 more mags and a case!
