| Mini-14 accuracy
I was givven my mini in trade for some work, the old guy i got it from never used it much but after spending a lot f time hunting in the northwest for all sorts f game and vermin I found that the mini was at first unpleasant to shoot due to the poor trigger pull. I spent some quality time polishing and lightening the trigger pull to about a pound and a half. this really hepled my grouping at 100yrds and have recently been in many shooting competitions with friends at 300-500 yards. fab-tech makes a silicon buffer for the rear recoil which helped also, so much infact that i designed one to fit the front of the hammer slide also. i also tapped a small hex screw for the back of the trigger to shorten the trigger pull. I found an old 3-9 redfield scope that has proven its durability time and again and it still hold zero at 300yrds grouping in 3-5in's. indeed the barrel heating up has alot to do with its drop in accuracy, this is my next attempt to improve the mini.

i traded a wasr 10- ak 47 , for a new mini 14 with wood. new 580 series. went to the range today, bench rest shooting shot fine with the ghost ring at 50 yards within a 1 inch 1 1/2 group.... i really like them for open sights mounted a scope 3x9x40 shot 100 yards , close to the same result 1 to 1 1/2 inch, i did not rapid fire just 1 at a time let it cool down. i had a mini in the 80's and had to let it go but i never had a problem with it grouping or function.... the Ruger mini 14 looks cool and is tuff, might not be for everyone but for $669.99 to $800.00 ain't a bad purchase.. only AFTER MARKET mag i found that worked well was a steel ProMag 20 also bought 2 Ruger 20 mags for 39.99 each , just stay away from the cheaper stuff buy a Ruger 20 mag and that should do just fine...... |
