| m77 Mark II rifles
Does anyone have any experience with these? I've been looking at one, and I wondered how accurate they were, and just some overall opinions. thanks.

i have a 77mk II in 338 win mag and my brother has one in 308. both stainless, the win mag is tough and needed a packmyr pad to reduce felt recoil still dialing it in but its grouping a little over an inch with factory trigger and factory ammo my brothers is the skeloten stock that ruger discontinued a while back, and has a 3 lbs triger (timny) it will shoot sub moa"s all day and has taken a heck of a lot of deer & hogs both are in my opinion some of the nicest factory guns ive ever had, especialy for the $ and the rings that come with it are as good or better than most, at the present time (if i understand corectly) ruger is introducing the mk III and the mk IIare being sold at a discount i got my 338 at sportsmans wharehouse for $469 not a bad deal and allowed a little mor for a higher quality scope go for it

I have had mixed results with Ruger 77s over the past 25 years. I had a .30-06 and a 7mm Mauser, neither of which would group under 3". Had chamber casts made and determined they had very long chamber throats. No chance for accuracy unless I re-barrelled them or had the barrels set back and re-threaded. I wasn't willing to sink the money into either. A few years back I bought a used .308 77, intending to re-barrel it in .22-250. However, when I shot it (in .308) it grouped around 1" - 1 1/4 " with match handloads, even with the not great factory trigger. It is now my backup deer rifle. A few months ago I bought a heavy-barrel .308 77 with a laminated stock. This rifle has a terrific two-stage trigger. Yesterday it put six rounds into 3/4", match handloads. I think it's a keeper. What does this mean? All rifles are individuals. Some shoot, some don't. I do like Ruger's action, and their assembly quality is good. I would not hesitate to buy one. Whether or not it shoots is an exercise in probability. |

338, I have had a couple that were as you describe. But I have two .308s (77s), a #1 in .30-06, and a #3 in .45-70 that shoot just fine. The triggers are adjustable. They are not all stinkers. |

I have a .243 in stainless with synthetic stock, topped with leupold vari-x II. All I shoot is factory ammo, since I have yet to get a reloader, and I am very pleased with the accuracy of my rifle. I am not a big fan of the style of my synthetic stock and it will be replaced in a year or so, but overall a great gun and well worth the money.
