ruger .30-06

i bought a ruger .30-06 with a stainless steel barrel and a black synthetic stock from a friend and its supposed to be a light weight one he said im going to be shooting about 120-130 g bullets so the recoil wont be bad is the recoil bad on smaller grain bullets like this and is this a nice gun?

sounds like a great gun i love those m77s. The lighter bullets don't usually kick as bad.

Yep, m77 is the model number, good gun, I have one in 300win. mag. I have two 30-06's and they just don't do as well with those light bullets. 150,165&180 gr. is what mine shoot best with the 180 being the best of the 3.

No offense to your friend, but YOU'RE going to be shooting whatever you want and, I think you'll find the heavier gr. bullets will shoot better. The Ruger 77 is an excellent piece of machinery and I think you'll be very happy with it. I'd suggest a good recoil pad, then start experimenting to find the load it likes best.

I've got the same gun in .30-06 and shoot 200grn bullets out of it all the time. The recoil isn't bad at all, only slightly more than my 8mm 24/47.

If you are concerned about the recoil, and that is nothing to be ashamed of, I would suggest you take it to a gunsmith and have him fit it to you and install a Pachmayr Decelerator. I did this for a 30-06 for my daughter. The gun kicked too hard even for me..the gunsmith cut the stock down and installed the pad. End of problem, I am very impressed with this product. I think the charge was $75 and he moved the sling stud and plugged the old hole which was too close to the butt after cutting it off.
