Bought a new .22 today - Ruger Mark III Target Pistol

Bought a new .22 today - Ruger Mark III Target Pistol

This morning I took the money that I was gonna use to buy a .22 conversion kit for my 1911 and bought a new Ruger Mark III Target pistol for $319.00 from a gun shop in Butler, GA, instead.

I didn't like all the things I read about conversion kits - especially being too light to truly mimic a 1911. And for the money of a good one, I could buy a brand new .22 pistol - so, that's what I did.

I haven't shot it yet. I'm waiting on a Millet Red Dot scope to arrive (bought it for $60 from gunbroker.com). I looked at a Browning Buck Mark, also, and the gun shop owner said they were both great guns. But since the Mark III came with a rail for the scope, and the Browning didn't, I went with the Ruger.

Long ago I used to have a Mark I, or maybe it was a Mark II, anyway, I was glad to see that Ruger has done away with the thumb release for the magazine that was located on the bottom rear of the handle. My new Mark III has the magazine release up by the trigger - much better. I hope this new pistol shoots as good as my old one - another one that got away from me. Have you notices that it seems that whenever you get rid of a pistol, even many, many years ago, it always comes back to haunt you - or is it just me?

Good choice. I would say your old was a Mark I with the mag release where you describe it. I have a Mk.II .22/45 and it's up where you would expect after shooting a 1911. My Mk I has it down on the bottom of the grip. I wasn't sure if the .22/45 had it in a different place to mimic the 1911 or if all the Mk IIs have it there. Now I know.

blt, I have a 1963 vintage Ruger Mark I with standard 4 inch barrel. It has that European-style release down on the butt instead of up by the trigger guard that is so much more efficient and easier to use than the European style mag release. As I'm using it for aiming and control practice and not attempting to compete with it or use it as a personal defense gun, it's adequate for my needs. But except for a couple of C&R pocket pistols I've collected, it's the only gun I have with a European-style mag release.

Congrats on the new pistol bltefft !

When I was looking for a good .22 semi-auto pistol, a friend suggested any of the Ruger Mark series. I ended up buying the Mark III with a bull barrel, I shoot it more than any other firearm that I have and its very reliable.

Thats a fine Mark I NRAJOE.

I got a Ruger Mark III competition target stainless with the slab sides. I put a Nikon Monarch scope on it, I think it's a 2.5 x 8. Totally overkill, but this is an accurate little gun. Have to bench shoot it, but when I just want to point and shoot I have the Browning Buckmark. I wouldn't get rid of either one of them.
