Help wanted with Ruger Bearcat cylinder

Help wanted with Ruger Bearcat cylinder

My Father-in-law passed along his Bearcat to me when he passed away many years ago.

I rarely shoot it, thinking it hasn't that accurate.

Well, I took it to the range yesterday and found out my opinion of it was wrong, real wrong - it shot good.

Here's my problem. Some of the "chambers" in the cylinder are tight, some are not. I mean, in some, the new round just slips in and in a couple of them I had to really push to get it in.

I came home a cleaned the cylinder, ran a copper bore brush through the six chambers, especially the tight ones and though it's a little better, the rounds don't go in as easily as they do with, say, my big Super Blackhawk.

Do you have any suggestions on how to "loosen" the chambers in the cylinder?

Oh yeah, stupid me, what I thought were bad scratches on the cylinder turns out to be pretty etchings. I could always feel them, but took out my magnifying glass the discovered the etchings.

Here's the etching

you can have the cylinders honed or just live with it, they may loosen up with time. As for the etchings I had mine filled with some gold flake to ,make them stand out also made the revolver look good.

Some of the chambers may be near minimum tolerance. Have you tried this with several brands of ammunition?

Its just a thought, but I had a friend bring me a Smith an Wesson 686 some years ago with the same problem it seems he had been useing 38 special reloads with no lube on the lead projectiles and he had the worst case of lead build up in the chambers Ive ever seen ,this of cause stoped him inserting 357 ammo, the barrel was so bad I had trouble getting a rod down the bore, I pluged the barrel and chambers with small corks an filled them with mercury and left overnight, this fixed the problem, but take care mercury is dangerous to your health,

Something just occurred to me. When I got the pistol, I also got several boxes of 22 shorts. I'd bet that's the problem, he had been shooting shorts. Got clean those chambers again and again.

I changed ammo. Dropped in Federal long rifles. All six chambers - no problem at all.

I reckon it was just the Winchester ammo after all.
