Exclamation Ruger Mini 30 CQB Rifle

I have recently aquired a Pre-ban Ruger Mini 30 and am building a SBR for CQB/patrol use.

I had a stock Mini 30 years ago - loved it, always was a great little shooter. Glad to have a replacement for that gun.

I am considering a SCAR stock with the folding M-4 stock, Accurancy Inc 1" bull barrel (cut down to 13" and threaded for an AAC supressor), surefire's vertical foregrip/light combo, and EOTech sight.

My biggest concern - BEFORE - commiting to this project is what seems to be a complete lack of high capacity magazines that actually work! The aftermarket 20 and 30 round mags I have tried thus far suck!! I tried Triple K, and Promag.

Can anyone suggest where I might acquire durable and reliable 20 or 30 round mags for my Mini 30???

Did Ruger make any LE mags for the Mini 30 (or are the mini 14 shooters the only lucky ones?)??

Please help!

Ruger is of no help in the HiCap area.
I purchased some generic 20-rounders from Cope's and had a difficult time with them. I modified two and sent the rest back. After firing the first round the second round would push the bolt lock and lock the bolt back. After grinding down the faux cartridge on the follower and getting no where I decided to just say to heck with the bolt lock and cut the bolt lock plunger (tit) off the magazine follower. Lo and behold it worked! Both of them work flawlessly and I still have the bolt lock after the final round. I have no idea who made these but they are steel and have the appearance like an AK magazine.
I also have four ProMag 10-rounders that work very well; and, of course, a couple Ruger 5-rounders. I stuck with the 10-round PrroMags after talking to several owners who stated anything larger than the 10-round ProMag did not work.
Hope this helps.

I too had the same problem. I bought every type of mag I could find. Finally I bought 2 from Eagle Manufacturing, or Eagle International inc. They're the clear plastic ones. Work great every time. The down side is they crack after prolonged use.

Armydog and Oldjarhead:

Reading lots of comments on 'Perfectunion' by seasoned Mini owners, by selecting 'Mini 14', and onto 'Mags' (upper section on page), indicates that those Promag 10-rounders are probably the best. Others really like PMI but they may be out of production.

You guys should read that website, if not already.
I'm sort of new to guns and the two silver metal (unmarked) mags which came with my M 30 are useless, and I'm just a plinker. My first gun purchase was one year ago (am 53). Many of those guys at P-union really know their Minis.

Frankly, many formerly loyal Ruger customers quit Ruger products altogether, due to Ruger's arrogance about this high-cap. mag issue (it's a very long story), and use ARs or AKs.

Used Mini 14, 30, two MN 44s and one SKS.

ArmyDog, might I suggest trying here? You might want to call and see what brand if you are unable to verify that online, if they have any. Also, if they have none, they might be able to find/get you some?

http://cdnninvestments.com/ruger2.html Scroll down to bottom of page for mini 30 mags. Not sure if they are in stock or if they are other then you've tried? You'll have to verify/find that out. Good luck.

Oh and welcome to G&G. Glad to have ya'...

I don't really care for Ruger anymore. Their quality has slipped drastically over the last 40 years and I dare say their accuracy at any distance sucks hind tit.
I've own(ed) Ruger Mini-14 (ok for what it's worth), a Mini-30 (ok after some extensive mods), 2-10/22's which are the best thing Ruger ever manufacured, Ruger Mark I wihich was mediocre, and a Ruger Mark II BB that I hated.
IMHO, Ruger should stick with the 10/22 and drop the rest.
As for the hi-cap magazine issue, Jr simply sold out to governmental bans.

I agree that Ruger has made a major mistake in bowing to political presure and not making hi-cap mags. Unfortunetly, my state bans AK-47 in 7.62X39!! And in my opinion. 5.56mm (.223) sucks for put-down power in CQB.

Might end up looking for a AR-10. Any thoughts on modifying to Ruger reciever to accept AK-47 Mags?

On Perfect Union, one of the guys took a 30 round Mini-30 mag and added the spring and follower from an AK 30 round mag. Says the new Mini mag is working.

You might have to mod the follower some to fit the new magazine. Check the site he has pictures.

Thanks for the suggestion, they are made by NATIONAL and by all reports just as crappy as the others - we will see. Thanks anyway!
