I have an old model carbine and I gotta say...its a PIA to tear down completely and clean. There must be a thousand parts in there. I love the handling and accuracy of it tho. My son wont hunt with it mainly because its so difficult to load and unload. My mother originaly owned it but I snuck it away from her, LOL. I started handloading for it way back when they stopped making "Rifle" ammo for it. I love the accuracy of it, and the wallop!

They haven't made that one for awhile. I bought one when they came out, and, as has been my story throughout this forum, I was DUMB ENOUGH TO TRADE IT OFF for another "must have". I bet you guys don't do things like that!? Anyway, it was a fine little piece.

To this day I regret it.

I had a choice between an H&R 929 and a Ruger Bearcat back around 1968. Either one was selling for about $42.00; guess which one this dummy bought! Also bought an S&W mod 61 "Escort" for $55.00. Not much of a gun, but I've seen them for $400.00 + now.

I have the newer version, much improved, less recoil, great for thick woods. It's small, light, and I've killed many with it. 300 lb. Hog @ 80+ yds. Deer @ 135+ yds. Shoots well with Winchester Super Nosler partition gold 250 gr. jhp. mine shoots a 3/4" to 2" group (cold barrel/warm barrel) @ 100 yds. The only thing I'd change is the mag. got to reload every five shots, wish I had a 10 or 15 rounder. I'll never sell mine, I've had offers $200 over what I paid for it brand new! Definitely worth having!

a little over 20 years ago I shot my first Ruger Deerfield carbine. threw it to my shoulder, looked thru the rear peep, and instantly exploded a water filled milk jug at the 100 yd mark with my first shot. with a big grin I handed it back to its owner and said "thats the ultimate deerslayer! I got to have one" then he told me that Ruger ceased production, grab one if you can find one. since then I have searched gun shows over the years and have found 2 in the past. the first was beat up and most of the blueing gone with pits in the barrel for $450.00 passed on that one. the next was years later. it was well usedbut in pretty good shape at 80-90% but he wanted $600.00 and wouldn't budge. if he would have come down to 500 i would have bought it but didn't have the extra 100. I'm still searching. hopefully someday.
and yes, the Ruger Deerfield Carbine only came chambered in .44 Remington magnum.
I keep hoping someone at Ruger will wake up one day and re-introduce this gun.
don't try and improve it, just build it.

| 44 Carbine DeerStalker
I have a 1966 Deerstalker .44 Carbine with the full mannlicher stock. Shoots like a dream. Real accurate for a short gun. Ive had a surprising number of people over the years tell me they wish they had never sold theirs.

A local pawnshop had one a few weeks back. I thought he had it tagged wrong at first and thought it was a 10/22, but then I got to looking. I think he wanted $200-$300 dollars for it. I didn't have the money, or it would have been mine. I read about them recently in a magazine and it would be perfect for the way I hunt. I have thought about going back and seeing if he has it and seeing will he trade for my mosin and 80 rounds of ammo. It would just be a better deer rifle for me than the mosin.

One of the guy on vaguntrader has one for $450. It's a C&R now, so if you have a C&R license, he can ship direct to you.
