I have recently purchased a box of remington ammo (165 grain) and I am periodically having misfires. It appears that the firing pin is not striking the primer as hard on misfires than on those that fire. Today was especially bad as I had a misfire on an impressive white-tail buck! Originally when I purchased the gun new under cold weather conditions this same thing occurred. I had a gunsmith clean out the factory grease, stretch out the firing spring and it worked great for several years. The weather conditions now are not that cold only slightly below freezing. The firing pin is fine. Could the problem be with the firing spring and should I replace it. The bolt mechanism is clean so that is not the problem. Any help with this problem would be appreciated, thanks!
check and make sure that the firing pin is the correct length. This can usually be measured with a caliper (depth guage rod on shaft of caliper). It may not be indenting the primer enough.
Remington uses hard primers, so the strength of the firing pin spring may not be heavy enough.
Your choice of oil may be thickening causing the oil to thicken to a grease like consistancy. Clean the bolt real well, wipe with an oil like Break-free and wipe off.
